3. This happened to my iPhone and I had to get a new one.

Everytime I charge it I back it up so I didn't have any problems whatsoever. It was seamless. They even removed my screen protector and slapped it on the new one.

4. I'm unclear on why you think this is a bad or unfair thing.

So far, the battery in my almost-two-year-old iPhone 3G is doing just
fine, even though its lithium ion battery gets reasonably-far discharged
every day as a result of *LOTS* of use. So if it needs a new battery after
three (or even two!) years and it costs me $100 for that battery swap, I
won't feel ill-used.

And it's trivially-easy to back up the phone using iTunes, so unless
you're one of the people who hates iTunes for "political" reasons,
there's no beef there, either.

That's really one of the beauties of the iPhone "ecosystem": all
this stuff just works.

I was thinking of getting one for portable displays but now I'm not so sure. I just don't understand why they can't make a user serviceable battery? More cynical people have said that it is just good old fashioned corporate greed. I'm guessing it has more to do with design complexity?

It takes a 3 cent connector and a little forethought to make a slot for the battery.

Everything else has a replaceable battery, laptop, phone, radio, etc, etc. Not apple.

18. There are reasons not to have a removable battery.

1. Batteries last a pretty long time these days meaning there's
not much need to replace them. Also, unlike certain mobile
phones that need to have to have removable batteries so you
can "unjam" them, Apple iPhones (etc.) don't jam much, and you
can always unjam them without needing to remove the battery.

2. The case can be simpler and mechanically much more rigid
if there's no need for a battery door. And without the long seam
of the battery door, there are fewer ways for water to intrude
into the case. And lack of a battery door also saves on cost.

3. There's no need for a battery connector, or at least not
for one that is operated frequently. That saves money and
adds reliability.

4. The battery can probably be slightly larger physically
so it can have a slightly higher electrical capacity.

5. There's far less chance of the phone being "crashed"
by the sudden removal of the battery, so the reliability
of the file system is more-easily assured.

Don't be surprised if the "non-removable battery" trend
spreads to other mobile phones, laptops, and netbooks.

To me, the Ipad looks like a hunk of junk. Don't get me wrong.. I love my iphone, but the ipad seems like an itouch made bigger. I will be buying a tablet but the odds of it being the ipad are slim to none.

Remember that the iPad is built like an iPhone, not a Macbook. By default, a data backup will occur as aprt of the Sync process every time you plug it in to your computer to recharge.
