Subliminal messages on FOX TV shows?
I was watching "Prison Break" last night on FOX, and at one point they did one of those 'special bulletins' using FAUX News about the escaped convicts. They made it look pretty realistic, complete with the scrolling headlines along the bottom. In this case, one of the scrolling headlines was quoting the fictional Speaker of the House saying that a timetable for pulling out would "send the wrong message to the radicals."

WTF? I suppose that I shouldn't be surprised, this is FOX after all.

1. Are you serious?
Normally I think "a show is just a show," but...

5. Yep, it ruined an otherwise enjoyable show
I was expecting them to have some fictitious news, such as "earthquake reported in ABC" or something generic like that. This seemed a pretty straightforward way for FAUX to get their point about Iraq out.

17. but....
the issue of how the White House controls the media was addressed when they showed the guy that is pulling the strings of the conspiracy ordering one of his lackeys to "get them (the news networks) to put something else on" even going so far as to saying isn't there a war going on somewhere when the networks were airing the video tape that Michael and Linc made talking about how the President was involved with the conspiracy

3. I've thought for a long time that programs like "Cops" contribute to an irrational climate of fear
that keeps many of us dependent on "the powers that be" for a sense of security.

6. My feeling about shows like "Cops"
Shows like "Cops" and these numerous 'behind the scene' prison shows have replaced the carnival freak shows. The only thing missing is Sheriff John Bunnell narrating, "Over here, you can see a crackhead Negro, and over here we have a trailer park hillbilly strung out on meth."

BTW - is there anyone more annoying or more sanctimonious than Sheriff John Bunnell?

10. Excuse me, but what makes you think that we who live in
mobile home parks are hillbillies strung out on meth? Remarks like that offend me.

people accused of crime, which too often is a far cry from reality.

12. Exactly
Which is why I used the "sideshow freak" remark. Shows like "Cops" seem to use these types of people for the amusement factor.

28. I think part of the goal is to make their viewers feel good about themselves
so instead of "Here's the guy whose family was killed in a car wreck, lost his job and suffers from a serious untreated depression who drinks himself into a stupor nightly and is driving to find a telephone pole to wrap his car around and is going to be arrested for your entertainment and then placed in a cell where he will remove his jeans and use them to hang himself with." We get, "Hey, there's one of those evil DUI's who is out here threatening YOU and YOURS with malice and forethought! Watch as we make this bastard pay and stumble shirtless through the brush before the long unerring hand of the law saves YOU from this lurking evil."

Hense, Average Joe watches with his own Miller's Lite in hand and turns to his wife saying, "We're so much better than that scum."

To that end, I'd agree. Welcome to DU. :hi:

14. To answer your question, yes.
Dick Cheney.

I have watched "Cops" a couple of times, but only because it was "nothing else on" kinda TV night. Sure would like to see an upcoming episode where by they have a large house in DC surrounded and are trying to get the two criminals inside to come out. They can't use tear gas because they don't want to harm the historical items inside, so they resort to playing music over loudspeakers to force the perps out.

"Bad boys, Bad boys, watcha goina do when they come for you. Bad boys, bad boys....."

Get that theme song belting out loud enough and maybe George and Dick will surrender.

Sure can't wait for that episode. It's a "taper" for sure. :sarcasm:

18. I wish there were carnival freak shows on tv. That would be sweet.
I'd throw popcorn at the lobster boy and yell things at the bearded lady. Because they're freaks!!!!!

Any-hoooo, I'm just saying that I'd love a show that was just about freaks on camera. Maybe have a host who would occasionally point at them and scream "You're a Freak!!!!!".

Cops replaced that show? Fuck. I say we bring it back on. Since congress has lots of time(since they're not impeaching) lets encourage them to hold hearing on the lack of carnival freak tv programming. For shizzle.

20. You're being sarcastic, right?
Maybe it's just me, but I don't find it fun or funny to make fun of people on the basis of physical appearance (which, in the cases you cited, are due to genetic factors over which the "freaks" have no power).

22. No-we should mock lobster boy. I firmly believe this. He's a freeper anyway.
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 11:28 AM by JacksonWest
If you're going to throw things at him-I only condone soft things-like marshmellows and cotton candy.

:sarcasm:

But, you're not alone. Billy Crystal doesn't find it fun, or funny either.

13. It Should Be Renamed Strawman News...
Welcome to DU

:hi:

The right wing spin machine's game is to suggest ideas through backdoor tactics. It's framing questions in ways to make a person look bad without directly calling them a wife-beater or manufacturing a scenario where this strawman becomes a boogie man. It's a very black and white world with little room for questioning. It's also intended to play to the fearful...those who want certainty in a world that offers anything but. It preys on those who want to know "everything is OK" by creating all sorts of evils and demons to prove how well they are "protecting" us.

While they've got Rupert Murdoch's billions to buy stations, newspapers and satellites...we have truth and history on our side. The absurdity of Faux Noise...which many of us had seen since its inception...is now seen by a majority in a similar light. The network is slowly becoming a parody of itself as it marginalizes itself by trying to hold onto an audience that shrinks by the day and rising death toll in Iraq.

10 years ago, Faux Noise was amusing and annoying. Now it's bitter and irrelevant.

15. I whole heartidly agree with your statement. You feed your mind with garbage, i.e. FAUX, and that's
what you get running through your mind, garbage. I don't even understand why Repukes watch FAUX. After a while, I get bored listening to people who just support my own point of view.

27. i boycott them pretty much entirely as well...
but i break it for just two shows- 'king of the hill', and 'american dad'.

otherwise, the boycott is total.

unless there's something REALLY good on the faux movie channel(they do have a very large film library, after all).
