American society appears to be undergoing a crisis in trust. Most of the major organizations that we depend upon, including governments of all types, corporations, our health care system, our financial institutions, and our schools all seem to be failing us. Indeed, I do not believe it is an exaggeration to claim that our society is actually undergoing a disintegration process whereby the fundamental premises and values supporting our institutions are all being called into question. While such disintegration is of course very painful to experience, it is also a tremendous opportunity for genuine transformation. My essay will attempt to outline some of the most important values and strategies necessary for the creation of, and the transformation to, high trust organizations.

Higher Purpose

Virtually all of our societal organizations seem to have either forgotten or have never really known why they exist and what their higher purposes are. Instead, they have often elevated narrow individual and institutional self-interest into the only purposes that they recognize as valid. Our governments all too frequently serve the politicians and the public service unions rather than their citizens. Our schools too often serve their educational bureaucracy and teachers' unions instead of their students and their parents. Our health care system too often seeks to maximize the profits of pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, doctors, and insurance companies rather than the health and wellness of patients. Many of our corporations primarily exist to maximize the compensation of their executives, and secondarily shareholder value, rather than value creation for customers, employees, and other major stakeholders. Thanks for this. I can't help but think that China's stuff must be REALLY bad for the FDA to actually find something wrong with a shipment (I think they're woefully understaffed).

Ever since the pet food nightmare, I don't trust ANYTHING from China.

I'm grateful that the country of origin is required to be on the label, although so many ingredients that go into a product are able to slip under the radar that way.

Just yet another good reason to buy locally.

However, my son and I were diagnosed with Celiac Sprue a decade ago and while I was trying to figure out the diet, Whole Foods really helped. I don't like their CEO and I've stopped shopping there but it's easier to understand my diet now and there is much more availability of the flours elsewhere.

Love TJ's. And truthfully, really liked WF before I found out about the negative stuff (and when I had $$$ to spend).

I initially became disenchanted with WF when I was unable to find any brand of stevia other than their own label. Reminded me of Safeway having the lion's share of shelf space filled with their own various labels.

10. I worked in one of their corporate offices for a short period of time.

It was a sweat shop. Our department was supposed to have 13 employees. We had 5 open positions & in the nine months I was there, they never filled them. So, we worked untold hours - on salary! - to get the work done. One night I added up the number of hours I worked a week, calculated my hourly rate based on that & gave my notice the next day. The manager was shocked. No kidding. His attitude was that WFM was such a fantastic place to work, why would anyone object to working overtime? I pointed out that since I was salaried, not hourly, I wasn't working overtime, instead, I was giving WFM hours & hours of my private life for zero compensation.

It was an interesting place to work. You immediately fit in or you didn't. I knew within two weeks I'd made a terrible mistake leaving my other job.

They offer their employees a 20% discount. You know what? Even with the fucking discount, the prices at Vitamin Cottage were lower! :crazy: :crazy: :crazy: I gave up my 360 brand beloved creamy miso dressing, which I loved, because I will never shop there again.

13. That's interesting. I think I always assumed it was a good

place to work because the cashiers were punked out, covered in tattoos, etc., which I took to mean a liberal, accepting atmosphere. And since they were kind of pioneers in bringing us "good" food, I again read that as an indication that they were a "good" company.

The response from management reminds me of people I knew who worked for Microsoft and got the same reaction when they would quit because they were working a zillion hours a day. I think Microsoft has very good benefits though. Of course, they were busted and had to pay a large penalty because of their practice of ending Temps contracts JUST before it was time to convert them to FTE, in order to avoid having to provide those afore-mentioned excellent benefits. :-) I remember a time when someone would say they worked at Microsoft, the first question would be "employee or contract?"

I will say the clerks in the stores are friendly & helpful, so maybe the company is more appreciative of them, since they deal with the customers. ???

I will say, WFM had really good health benefits. After five years of service, the company pays the entire premium for your entire family! Every five years they put the benefits package up for a vote. Because there are more hourly employees, they vote for better health/vision/dental benefits over 401k matching, which pissed a lot of the corporate office workers off! Not being a 401k contributor, I always got a kick out of that.

15. what pains me is that they bought out all the Wild Oats...

including the one within walking distance of me. While that store retained a lot of the "flavor" and "culture" of the old WO store--in terms of the staff and neighborhood feel, they replaced WO items with WF and (of course) raised prices to exorbitant WF levels and ceased the regular and very competitive sales on vitamins and other products that I used to have on my calendar.

So, damned sad... I love miso dressing to, btw... I need to learn to make it from scratch, I guess.

It's so yummy! California Pizza Kitchen has a miso salad that has the same dressing on it. It's full of Napa cabbage, carrots, edamame, avocado & some crunchy Chinese noodle topping. I used to go there all the time just for that salad, but then they started adding crab to the salad & raised the price. When I order it without the crab, they charge me the same high price for just cabbage, ($13!) so I stopped going there. :eyes:
