Mostly paperbacks, but would like to donate to a local place. Will take any suggestions.

2. I'd give them to my local used book store. |
|
Yes, used book stores are a commercial business which will turn around and sell them for profit.
But IMO, local used book stores are just the kind of businesses I like to support.

that the patrons bring in and swap and share with each other. My days playing pool I saw lots of them.

You turned me on to William Bernhardt a while back....I've read all of his Ben Kincaid books since then and am waiting for his latest, CAPITOL BETRAYAL (due 3/16/10).
Thanks again...

I must confess that I missed William Bernhardt's last book (need to wait for paperback or hike to Strand's next time I go to NYC)
Bernhardt's other novels are good as well!

so I will also suggest library for their book sales.

19. My local library accepts donated books. Even if it doesn't want any of them for its own collection, |
|
it provides a space for giveaway books, with a small note posted that gently points out that if one should be so inclined, one could make a modest donation to the library when picking up a free book. (I always give the library at least a buck when I've found a giveaway book I want.)

24. check with local high school seniors/senior project |
|
Often you'll find that some senior projects entail the collection of books and magazines and the students will then donate them. My nephew did this, I posted signs in my apartment building for magazines. He collected over 2000 and gave them to retirement and nursing homes.
