Sacramento police dog undergoes surgery following home invasion shooting


SACRAMENTO, CA - A Sacramento police K-9 officer named Bandit went into surgery Tuesday afternoon after being shot while responding to a reported home invasion.

The suspected robber was shot and killed by police a short time later as he tried to flee the south area home, said Sgt. Norm Leong with the Sacramento Police Department. The incident happened at 8:35 p.m. Monday in the 2000 block of O'Neil Way.

Leong said a 17-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy were inside the home when the man, said to be in his thirties, forced his way inside. One of those inside the home called 911 and when police showed up, the suspected robber was still inside.

At some point, Leong said the man emerged from the back door, exchanged gunfire with an officer, and the bullet hit Bandit, a 4-year-old German shepherd.

Leong said the man then walked out of the front of the house still armed with a gun. The man did not follow officers' orders to drop the firearm, according to Leong, and officers in position in front of the house shot and killed him.

She said Bandit's prognosis for a full recovery was good.

Bandit's partner, Officer Gary Dahl, was emotional at times as he spoke outside the clinic. The married father of three said Bandit is his
family's pet. But he acknowledged that the dog's main job is to protect other officers, and he gave Bandit credit for taking a bullet that
might have killed a colleague.
