Microsoft: IE9 Won't Support Windows XP, Period

Windows XP users will not be able to run the final version of Internet Explorer 9, according to Microsoft executives, cutting out a decade-old, yet still popular operating system.

In fact, the Windows IE9 Platform Preview, as well as the final version, won't run on anything but the latest Microsoft operating systems. Users trying to run the preview code on an XP system will receive the following dialogue box: "Windows Internet Explorer Platform Preview does not support any operating system earlier than Windows Vista SP2."

It only makes sense the the OS vendor wants to give people as many reasons to upgrade their PCs to Wnidows 7 as possible, and not spend developer man-hours updating software that debuted nine years ago. Still, this probably won't make XP loyalists smile. They may even jump ship to fast browsers that do run on their platform – like Chrome, Opera, and Safari.

27. My former employer had a couple of IE based apps. I ran them on my Mac through Citrix.

Worked like a charm in Safari, Firefox, Camino etc...

19. Well first, I never use IE. But with OSX I don't get registry errors, spyware, etc.

OSX on mac platforms, but still use a couple PCs with XP-pro.

The PCs don't have any anti-virus programs, but are still susceptible to corruption.

I've only had one significant malware attack, and the free utility from malwarebytes cleared that up.

It's unbelievably challenging to edit the registry and make other changes to the PC to restore it to optimum working condition.

I'm always one step away from F-disk and reload of the OS, out of frustration.

Which is why I do not depend on my PCs, but I use them and help parents and friends maintain and troubleshoot theirs from time to time.

26. What kind of registry errors have you seen?

Is your error something that a 3rd party application wrote to the registry? A value that windows set incorrectly? If so, what value, and why was it in error? Did your system lock up? How did you find the error?

I've never seen one of these dreaded "registry errors" in my nearly 25 years of windows use, so I have to ask.

I also haven't seen a blue screen since XP was released (none in Windows 7 yet either).

36. Not even sure that's the right term. But terms like "regedit" and such come to mind.

It's been a few months since I had to help anyone out, but you know the kinds of steps that are required to track down and uninstall malware, don't you?

Finding and removing specific dll and other files, exe files, all kinds of crazy shit that are not for the weak of heart.

And if one does it wrong, it's a big problem.

40. Just install AVG, Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware, all are free.

The registry is nothing more than a data file tree with names and values, like..

ApplicationXvalue = 1
ApplicationYvalue = 0
textValue = "text"

That said, 99% of users will never have to even launch 'regedit', so it's not really an issue.

Why would you remove dll's and exe's? That is definitely dangerous, although modern windows doesn't allow you to remove system files unless you REALLY know what you're doing. Again, this will never be a problem for 99% of users.

Point is, windows problems have been universally exaggerated since the 80's. I've learned to live with these exaggerations, but I will certainly defend windows if offered the opportunity.

This reminds me of the HCR debate on so many levels. :)

47. Malwarebytes did it all for, I never actually went through with the manual removal approach.

So, it hasn't been so hard after all, as you indicate, and didn't cost money.

One hitch however was that my girlfriend's Dell caught something and the malwarebytes download current at the time wouldn't work properly on her machine or on my Toshiba.

By the time they posted the fixed program, she'd given the unit to her son who was supposed to load Vista for her.

She still hasn't gotten it back, poor thing, and is using one of my iBooks.

If she'd have let me keep it for one more week it would all be done.

...Apple is too proprietary and too friendly of lock-ins and DRM and the like to my tastes.

I use a regular cheap PC with Linux. Best of both worlds, and more.

Fuck MSIE. I've used Mozilla based browsers more than IE over all anyway, even going back to Mosaic. Netscape Navigator, Firebird/Firefox, SeaMonkey.... all of them superior to whatever version of MSIE was out at the time.

I like the titaniums best, bought one used just to have, last best model made 1Ghz w 1G ram.

From an industrial design perspective, this is Museum of Modern Art material, under an inch thick with that very narrow bezel, maximizing screen size.

When my employer gave me a green light to buy a new laptop, I went for the air but should have done my homework and gotten a MBP.

I'm back to using my black macbook because the Air is too damn slow.

Takes me about an hour to build, 2 hours max to install and tweak and I know how to tear it apart and fix it if there's a hardware problem.

Even my Windoze machines are reliable-haven't had a crash or infection in years.
