I don't understand why the Health Insurance "Industry" should be for profit in the first place. Capitalism should not apply here and we certainly shouldn't be trading our health on the market! Capitalism has run amok IMO.

1. Well, see-- that would go against the whole idea of the market.

Of course, so does mandating that the public purchase a product, but don't think about that. All hail the Market!

10. exactly

Can't we say when it come to life or death, profit should not get in the way? I am fully in support of the health care bill, even mandated insurance just as soon as they add this clause "insurance companies must be non profit"...

5. The democrats are their own worst enemy IMO. With a majority this all could have
been simple, but no. The democrats turned it into a fiasco. We should have had a public option from day one. In fact, Medicare for all would have been my first choice. I just can't believe how all of this has been so screwed up by in fact democrats.

12. Not just accounting, shady pricing is a HUGE problem.
THe insured end up paying something like 100% of cost plus 20% profit, the uninsured end up paying something like 1000% of cost plus 50% profit because that punishment was an inducement to BUY insurance.

With a mandate, said policy of punishment is no longer necessary. WILL THE F'ing Insurance corps actually change rates to reflect that?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

15. Health Insurance companies have low margins, wouldn't change much
Edited on Wed Mar-17-10 04:55 PM by madville
Premiums would decrease slightly since health insurance companies only profit around 3% to 6% on revenues. So instead of a $300 monthly premium, it could possibly go down to $285 in they were non-profit.

18. Single payer would put them out of business. No need to 'cap' anything.
Just let the market work it's magic.
