... that the People will soon abandon any hopes that the Government acts legitimately on behalf of and with the consent of the governed.

And that is dangerous.

You have to look no further than the history of our own country to see that there are potentially harsh consequences that could arise at any time once the Peoples' perception of 'legitimate government' has been lost.

For example, when those holding office tell the governed that they have no right to see what these officials are doing. When there are videotapes of torture, and documentation of those interrogations, that have been requested by subpoena and government officials destroy the evidence rather than turn them over, there is no legitimate force of law which these governmental officials recognize, and their de facto superiority over the law is enforced by no action taken to hold them to account.

We need to restore the faith of the People in their government, and a good first step is holding the Bush Administration Officials accountable rather than just 'moving on.'

Even so, they callously denied detainees the very protections they would insist upon.
