ABC News: Democrats Will Hold President's Feet to the Fire in Upcoming Hearings
Jan. 30, 2007

Jan. 30, 2007 — Today, the Democratic congressman who took on Big Tobacco will confront the Bush administration on allegations that it has suppressed global warming science.

Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., and the House Government Reform Committee will hear from government scientists who will testify that their work on global warming was distorted or suppressed by the Bush administration. This morning's hearing on global warming is just one of many investigations and actions that the new Democratic Congress is conducting on President Bush and his administration.

At one point, some of the more extreme members of the Democratic Party discussed impeachment proceedings, but Democratic leaders quashed that talk to focus on issues they felt the public could support.

1. Good for Waxman, but I hope he's got more in mind than footwarming
Hotfeet aren't going to stop the war against expertise in decision making that Bush is going to ram home in the next 24 months in order to make a legacy by out-doing Reagan's anti-regulatory sentiment.

It's extreme to talk impeachment as the constitution burns. I feel I'll be free again (maybe when I'm deceased).

6. I am confused....Pelosi said impeachment is off the table...
however -- no way in hell will Cheney and Bush cooperate with the committees, so when they don't cooperate -- they could go to jail for contempt of Congress and/or impeachment.

I am not a Lawyer, can any lawyers explain this? Did Pelosi change her mind?

"We see a war coming on Capitol Hill," a well-connected Republican attorney based in Washington recently told me, as I reported in my last column on the subject. The clash is not surprising, because Vice President Dick Cheney -- who is at the center of many of the subjects the Democratic Congress will be investigating -- is strongly opposed to Congress's inquiring into these areas. He believes the power of the presidency is at stake. Accordingly, as I noted earlier, he has made it quite clear that he is not going to cooperate with these investigations.

Before the conflict develops, it might seem helpful to go over the rules of the game -- to appreciate who is on solid ground, who is on shaky ground, and why this is the case. But as it happens, there are no rules!

7. Perhaps she wants it to put itself back on the table organically,
instead of politically. Though that is probably just my wishful thinking...
