The agency planning to explode a huge bomb at the old Nevada nuclear test site wrapped up the last of its public information meetings Sunday in Idaho. And on Wednesday, a court hearing is scheduled to discuss progress in a lawsuit against the test by the Shoshone Indian tribe. Also, the deadline for public comment on the test's Environmental Assessment has been extended to February 4.

These are the latest developments in Divine Strake, which many Utahns oppose, fearing that the massive blast will send radioactive particles in the Nevada test site soil downwind. The test of the 700 ton bomb made of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil could create a mushroom cloud rising ten thousand feet into the air. Utahns downwind worry that cloud will send radioactive soils over the same areas that were dusted with radioactive fallout after the Cold War era nuclear tests.

Idahoans Sunday expressed similar concerns. One, Lois Hansen, said "Its really terrifying," and added that she believes her family has suffered the downwind effects of the earlier nuclear tests. "My family is slowly dying of cancer," she said.

Comments about the test can be submitted two ways until February 4.

1. Testing the type of device used in the first WTC attack and OKC bombing
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 08:45 AM by HereSince1628
to what end? I don't get this. Clearly Divine Strake is bigger by magnitudes, if you are trying to simulate low-yield nukes there are other types of explosives.

Do the Neocons really need to test the device they plan to use for their "next Pearl Harbor?"

4. My guess is in a cargo ship. Not much else with that capacity.

Me thinks Cheney wants to demonstrate how the evil doers could take out a US port.

on edit...maybe even an Iranian port.

21. How Do You Get It Into The Ship?
Shipyards don't have 700 ton cranes. Cargo containers don't weigh 1.4 million pounds. They weigh about 50k! Perhaps it could be loaded bag by bag, drum by drum and assembled on the boat, but that wouldn't exactly be stealthy.

16. You don't deliver Divine Strake, you deliver the nuke...
that it's meant to simulate.

Divine Strake itself is constructed on site.

26. It's designed test the effects of a low-yield (1 kt) nuclear weapon on underground facilities
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 01:45 PM by jpak
Mini-nukes can be delivered by aircraft or missiles.

They are the size of a conventional bomb, but have explosive yields equal to 1000 tons of TNT.

The explosives assembled at the Divine Strake test site will simulate these blast effects...

edit: They want to see if mini-nukes can be used effectively against Iran's underground nuclear sites.

19. I still think it is not simulated, but a real test of a real mini-nuke.
And when it releases radioactive particles they'll say "Gee, you were right, it DID kick up old radioactivity from past explosions -- sorry about that".

They want their bunker busters, and need to test them - computer modeling and simulated detonations won't tell them what they need to know.

Divine Strake is disinformation.
