There are various groups that the Right is pandering to, and some of them are my neighbors, neighbors who are nice and polite and helpful in emergencies ( like hurricanes) and would give me the shirt off their back if I needed it. 6 of them belong to the rescue squad and came promptly last week when I had to call them to help my 82 year old neighbor. Just as respectful and sweet and gentle as they could be with her, it was wonderful.
And then they go home to listen to Fox and stock up on ammo.

My roofer, 64 years old, is convinced the government is going to take away his "freedoms" and his house and land. He has a wall safe of guns, mostly rifles and shotguns, which is very very normal here,
but he is determined that anyone who comes on his property to do him harm will get shot.
He is a crusty guy, I also strongly suspect he is functionally illiterate, and yet, he would do anything for us if we asked. We buy organic beef from him.
Our plumber is pretty much the same way.
Their families have lived here for at least 5 generations, on the same land.
These folks, who make up most of the population in this mostly rural state, are exceptionally self sufficient.

Any male over the age of 18 has a couple of guns here. It is normal.
These are not crazy militia types. These guys deeply believe in the right to their home and land,
I cannot emphasize enough how strong that value is for that. And they have "heard" the government wants to take it away. Does no good to talk to them about that.

when I see these sorts of remarks posted on-line, if these people realize deep down they're only blowing smoke, or if they're really as ignorant as they seem. I imagine it's a combination of the two.

For instance, don't these people know about IP numbers? It's as if they think adopting some freep pseudonymn renders them completely anonymous. I mean, if I was seriously contemplating armed revolt, I wouldn't come on line and boast about the fact. This seems especially bizarre given all their rants about "socialism" "communism" "fascism" "tyranny" etc. In a true tyranny people this stupid would have been picked off long ago.

Just by way of contrast, when the members of the White Rose, the Munich university students who organized against the Nazis in 1942-'43, sent out their leaflets, they made sure to buy postage stamps in small lots at a wide number of post offices, so as not to tip off the authorities. Similarly, they took care, when travelling with subversive literature from one city to another, always to sit in a part of the train far removed from where they'd place their bags, and never to have identifying information anywhere near the bags. Eventually they got sloppy, two of them were arrested distributing antiwar/anti-Nazi literature on campus, and all of them were subsequently arrested, with the core leadership executed by beheading.

These people wouldn't last a single day in a real, modern day tyranny. But then, thinking that Obama/Pelosi/Reid are capable of, much less contemplating, some massive state crackdown on folks like them is all a part of their central delusion, which is to see themselves as fierce underground resisters of the coming New World Order.
