Without NASA Russia will shoot down our satellites
http://bayareahouston.blogspot.com/2010/03/without-nasa-russia-could-shoot-down.html

These are comments from Bob Mitchell, President of the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership to the League City Chamber as reported by the Bay Area Citizen:

"If we don't have control of Space and the Russians do, they can easily shoot down our satellites and we would have no cell phones."

"Think about defense.” Our predator drones at Ellington Field that fly to Afghanistan and protect our coast also are operated by satellites"

6. Well, I, uh, don't think it's quite fair to condemn a whole program because of a single slip-up, sir
President Merkin Muffley: General Turgidson! When you instituted the human reliability tests, you *assured* me there was *no* possibility of such a thing *ever* occurring!

General "Buck" Turgidson: Well, I, uh, don't think it's quite fair to condemn a whole program because of a single slip-up, sir.

7. Cell phones do not depend on satellites
And the Air Force is in charge of space defense. NASA is supposed to be strictly civilian.

10. No, the military will continue to get plenty of money-- for space, or whatever they want.
NASA, however, will be continually subjected to short-sighted budget fucking because assorted flat-Earthers can't grasp that our future as a species depends on our moving out into the solar system, and inevitably piss and moan about the relative pennies on the federal dollar that NASA has to scrounge for.

Truthfully, though, Bob Mitchell should be more worried about China than Russia, in that regard.
