My husband lost his job today
Yay! In reality, we're celebrating. He'd been trying desperately to get out for months, but stayed because he truly cared about the creatures he worked with. One should never work with live beings if they're not in it for the love of the work. His boss, the owner, was in it for the love of the money. He had countless clients who said they'd never bring their beloved dogs back if he stopped working there.
Well, the other day, he put in his two weeks. The business is run poorly. His boss shows up maybe 8 hours a week. A WEEK! During Christmas, when there was a blizzard, who was there making sure all got taken care of? Not the owner, but my husband.
Last month, another blizzard/ice storm threatened and he spent the night at a nearby hotel so that he could be close to work. The owner didn't do this. He did. He often worked late, came in on days off and went above and beyond. He and another employee kept the place running; both have put in their notice.
His boss today didn't even have the guts to let him go herself, she had the new "manager" do it, saying they were "doing him a favor." My husband responded that it was no favor because he didn't have a job, and he deserved better than this.
He did deserve better than that. I'm so unbelievably pissed that I can't even think. What a slap in the face, to a wonderful human being who could have walked out and screwed his boss on any given day, and didn't.

2. I am so sorry.
There is no such thing as company loyalty or even common decency anymore.

3. Unemployment sucks!
I hope you have resources to live on.
We're in the same boat, going poor, and eating small.
Hang in there!!

4. Did he work at a doggy day care center or as a groomer?
If so, he might be able to do his own thing. Especially if his clients would follow him.

5. Your husband is a good man -- he doesn't deserve to be treated the way he was treated.
Hopefully he can find another job and can take his clients with him!!

I remember your health care post from a few days ago -- I hope things work out for you and your husband. Please keep us posted.

6. i'm a little worried about him...
he came home in a total rage, grabbed his mountain bike, headed out the door. thankfully he didn't take his road bike...i'd be more concerned with him riding in traffic. truthfully, i'd like to smack his boss in the head, but she'll be screwed on monday, so i take small pleasure in that.

he could go on unemployment for about three weeks, until his co-worker opens her place. funny story: she put in her two weeks last week and TOLD the boss she was opening a competing place. the boss's reaction was to tell the co-worker that she was welcome back anytime. ugh.
this same boss BEGGED my husband in january, for over an hour, not to leave.

i'm totally confused. hopefully we're going to go bowling with some friends later. and i have some savings. he's a resourceful guy, so we'll be okay. but i'll keep you all updated.

thanks for the good wishes. means a lot to me.:grouphug:

11. If your husband gave notice and quit, I don't think he is eligible for unemployment insurance
at least not here in Nevada he wouldn't be. Did I misread your OP? Did he quit or was he fired?

At any rate, seems your hubby was unhappy, so good luck to you and yours. Hope he finds a better job and soon.

12. Depending upon state laws, he may be able to collect unemployment for the two weeks
he gave notice for. A similar situation happened where I work. A woman gave her two week notice (she'd found a different job) and the owner told her she could leave immediately. She was able to collect unemployment for the two weeks she had given notice on because she was willing and able to work for those two weeks, but the boss had terminated her unjustly at that point.

So, he may be able to collect unemployment for the duration of the two weeks notice. I would definitely call the unemployment office as soon as possible and find out what the situation is in their area.

16. he gave his notice wednesday...
because he feels it's low class to just walk out. he and one other are the only full-timers, and he's always liked his boss as a person, so he wanted to give her time to get a new crop of full-time staff.
but yesterday, his boss let him go. he did absolutely nothing to deserve it. she's screwed on monday and for the next two weeks until his original last day.

17. Are you in OKC? If so,
please IM me and give me some details on the new business. I have a 6-mo old Boston and know lots of people with dogs--I'd be happy to pass that information along. Good pet people are hard to find . . . .

7. Sorry to hear this
but it does sound like he'll be better off working for his co-worker in the new place. He can watch the "old" place deteriorate and go under. With that kind of boss and no one dedicated like your husband to prop it up, that business is doomed to fail.

8. Don't forget to send out a flyer/mailer to those customers you know
your husband likes and knows. They'll drop her in a heartbeat when they find out he and his co-worker on their own. Much luck and good thoughts to you and him.

9. Why can't he start his own place?
If he's the one doing the work and the customers trust him?

10. He could...
but I'm in graduate school and will be finishing next year. Academics never get jobs at their alma maters, so we won't be here much more than a year and a half. To sink that kind of money into a place, and then leave in a year is crazy.
Now, he may go work with his former coworker, who's opening her own place June 1. But, we can't afford two months of no work.
He could also go work for our vet...we'll see. I think he needs a few days to process this.

18. yeah it's bad that the economy is tanking.

I've been having to work extra in Second Life trying to get people to go to my club. Partly i blame the companies, before the economy collapsed people were tipping clubs left and right, but now most clubs are strugging to get by.And on top of that, the companies that are laying off people instead of keeping them. http://www.rmtlondoncalling.org.uk/node/1366

Because it really makes me pissed off right now,Because to me i feel that stuff like tips are money in my pocket.
