4. In the past two years I have nose dived from 250 thousand to less than 100 thousand

and am heading for the basement. It is called "small business in 21st century America".

5. This is so one-sided.

Where's the option for people making less than, say, $10,000? I fall way under the minimum you have listed.

...but an additional category would dilute the results, I believe.

8. I don't know about diluting the results, but you would get an idea of how many DUers

are living near or below the poverty level for a single individual. That would be worth knowing.

16. Yes and no.

...For example, a couple living together and one stays home, that one staying home would answer the same as someone working and living by themselves on $10K a year.

Even income itself is somewhat worthless without cost of living adjustments for location -- I knew attorneys who lived comfortably on $25K in rural Colorado, in Manhattan not so much.

Self-selecting participation, wealth vs. income -- the list of possible problems is long. But this is meant to be a blunt instrument for discussion, nothing more, nothing less. :)

11. Our household went from just barely 6-figure

for 4 heady years - when both my spouse and I were employed full-time, to still middle class but 40% lower, with my layoff. He has always made more than me - despite the fact that I am more highly educated. With my layoff in December, I've been experiencing the indignity of being unemployed in our society, and an unemployment benefits recipient. Amazing how one is treated when they are on that end of the pendulum. I used to be a helper, now I'm a helpee, and I DON'T LIKE IT!

The money part is somewhat manageable - I've never cared that much for material things, as long as the minimum is met, which it is, after years and years of hard work and responsible money management. The unemployment insurance helps a lot. The part I miss the most? Being a productive member of society. Especially since I worked in non-profit "helping" services settings. I know the need out there is great, and I am highly able to help. But I can't find anyone to stoop to paying me. I do have some meaningful volunteer activities, including hosting an Afghan girl high school exchange student for the year, which is really rewarding. You get more than you give when you volunteer.

24. Same numbers; different reasons

I'm disabled; my disability payments are about $25K and I supported myself on that for years in the SF Bay Area. Then I married the man I'd been with (but not living with) for 15 years; his income is much higher than mine.
