I was working for a women's clinic back then and our protestors on days we did abortions were getting more and more vile and wanting to close down facilities. And this was in liberal New Haven! Fortunately, President Clinton and Congressional Dems got the FACE bill enacted (Freedom of Access to Clinics). Federal marshals were dispatched to clinics in cities that were under the most threat. Justice was swift. The RW f*ckers would've had their homes taken away from them for the fines they could have gotten...so real quick all those "clinic invasions" stopped...

Lesson: Get tough QUICK with these malcontents. Make penalties HURT. You protect civil liberties by ENFORCING THE LAW!

31. OK City was in 1995 as I recall. Clinton was elected in 1992.

The clinic stuff was going on before and right after Clinton's election. I worked at the clinic from 1987 to 1994. We had seen some pretty active demonstrations until Clinton took office and his DOJ took real steps to protect these clinics and women's access to them. GHW Bush certainly had not.

I can't draw a line directly between abortion and Timothy McVeigh. What I am saying is that these extremists come out of the woodwork, sometimes violently, when Democrats (in recent times) get elected. McViegh's thing seems to have been guns and vigilante groups. But the clinic stuff had very violent outcomes, too. Clinics were being bombed and invaded, protesters chained themselves to the doors with super glue poured into the locks on their chains. Doctors were shot. Some were also mentally ill. It was not a pleasant sight...things were ugly then...

live in a particularly red-neck area?...Mine isn't much better..I live in the northwest 'burbs of Chicago and I notice that the further west you go, the further away from the city, Chicago being on the east side by the lake...the more Red it gets.

I'm not sure why that is, but I'd guess it's that these people want to be as FAR away from "them minoritees" and university libruls, or whatever, as they can.

When Pigboy was just starting out in radio, one of his jobs was as a DJ in Pittsburgh; his schtick was to insult anyone who called in. A black person called him, and apparently the caller had a real heavy accent or something because Rush couldn't understand a thing the person was saying. So...Rush told the caller "go take the bone out of your nose and call me back."

Limbaugh later says he's sorry for having said that. The freepers, OTOH, say it with no sense of guilt.

There's always been a racist undertone to the far right; whereas we call people on the right side of the political spectrum "wingers," their term for us is "n****r lovers." I've even seen the term in literature: in Pat Conroy's The Lords of Discipline, Will McLean is ordered to watch out for Tom Pearce, the first black cadet in the history of Carolina Military Institute. In the movie this order was issued on the campus and Will was told The Bear had helped Will to stay in the school and that The Bear was calling his marker in. In the novel, the order was issued over a plate of oysters at one of Charleston's darkest restaurants; Will was told the editorial he wrote for the school newspaper, supporting civil rights, "proved there was one bona fide n****r lover in the Corps." I know there are others but that's the first one that came to mind. I also remember a "Politics Primer" in MAD Magazine a lot of years ago that said the reason the word "liberal" was invented was that conservatives couldn't get away with calling people n****r lovers anymore. The difference now is they can't, as much as they'd like to, relegate a black president to the back of the bus, and they're mighty pissed about it.
