Unions Threaten To Withdraw Support From Dems Who Vote No
moments ago
Union locals in the districts of Democratic no voters are promising to withdraw their support for the incumbent Democrats if they cast their vote against health care reform tomorrow.
Health Care For America Now spokesperson Jackie Schechner sends along the details of the locals actions against Reps. Jason Altmire (D-PA), Steven Lynch (D-PA) and Michael Arcuri (D-NY) along with letters to Altmire and Lynch from locals in their districts:
In Pennsylvania, the morning after Congressman Jason Altmire said that he would vote against the health reform bill, a group of United Steelworkers and SEIU members held a sit-in at his Aliquippa office.
In Massachusetts on Friday, labor leaders sent a letter to Boston Rep. Stephen Lynch which said, "Congressman, we will not be able to explain to the working women and men of our union why you voted against their interests." The letter was signed by 23 labor leaders including the President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and the Executive Vice-President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. Lynch was President of a Boston local of the Iron Workers Union before being elected to Congress.
...
Arcuri received a letter from the New York State AFL-CIO on Friday, signed by 27 New York State labor leaders, which said that a vote against the bill "would be a betrayal to our members who worked hard to help you win your office, and it would do an enormous disservice to the residents of New York's 24th Congressional District who stand to benefit enormously from this legislation."
