Had a Huge Banner made proclaiming "Mission Accomplished" and had the pResdident of the USA fly out to it special to acknowledge that the ship accomplished it's mission? That is what we are told to believe by Republicans. Not that Bush* and the Republicans were braying about Iraq and how we had whupped them...It was simply a celebration that a single ship accomplished it's mission. Something Naval ships do every single day and have since the Navy's inception..

3. And, that ship had to hold up its homecoming
And position itself so that it appeared to be farther out to sea than it really was so that the President could make a dramatic landing on the carrier deck? I can't believe the Republicans still try to defend that media photo op as anything other than a media photo op with an aircraft carrier and its crew as the backdrop.

Of course, since the media were 100% complicit in the charade, they're more than happy to let the Republicans continue to lie about it.

5. My father commanded two US Navy warships, and before he passed ...
his only comment was about the fact that the men and women aboard the Lincoln were being kept from their families for a few extra hours as the carrier set off the coast so Bush could have his photo op.
And no, Dad was never met with a huge banner when he brought either of his ships back to NAS North Island, and later to NAS Alameda.

7. The banner was the responsibility of the executive administration at the time
The original Bush speech (later edited) contained the words, "Mission Accomplished". The White House paid for the banner. The White House had the banner created. The White House delivered the banner. The White House hung the banner. The USS Abraham Lincoln was only 30 miles offshore and well within range of Bush's helicopter. These are all historical facts (some of which were originally falsely portrayed otherwise by the White House).

Rove may still be trying to pretend otherwise, but this is either pure ignorance at best or cold calculated illegitimate distortion of history at worst. I'll go with the later. Those dipshit GOPhers still think that if you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes truth, and given the childish mentality of their constituents, they might be right for all practical purposes.
