Charter School "Resource officer" maces 33 students & two employees

Security cameras in all classrooms and a written policy on the use of chemical sprays are among the future changes parents and students can expect at Linwood Public Charter School in Shreveport.

It didn't take a vote or much debate for school Director Buck Magee to announce the changes Monday to committee members and a sea of mostly empty auditorium seats at the school's board meeting Monday.

"We treat safety of our students as a top priority," Magee said. He recounted the events of the on-campus fight between two sixth-grade girls Thursday that ended with a reported 33 students and two school employees being sprayed with Mace by the school's resource officer, Sgt. Joey Willis, who also is a member of the Shreveport Police Department.

As a preventative measure, Magee said additional staff will be stationed in high-traffic areas, and there will be more communication with the school resource officer. Cameras for all classrooms already have been budgeted for next year, which Magee estimates will cost about $25,000 to $30,000.
Board members also are working with the charter's operator, Sabis International Schools Network, to create a written policy governing the use of chemical sprays by the resource officer.

And apparently doesn't mind MACING students.

7. i don't generally agree with cops in schools

but our local school resource officer has a master's degree (i know. he works for my agency) and is a great guy.

otoh, he doesn't, nor do we even carry MACE.

MACE is a chemical agent. most agencies carry pepper spray which is NOT mace.

i wouldn't be surprised if this article doesn't understand the difference

is being developed in the wake of this incident.

Because it was just pepper spray, not a chemical agent.

It used to be shocking 40 years ago when it was used on university students, now it's used on schoolkids.

MACE is very rarely used in civilian law enforcement these days.

imo, it's more likely than not, that it was NOT mace.

fwiw, i've been maced once and pepper sprayed 4 times.

11. Macing students like this is deporable

Schools should not be governed as police states. The students should be there to learn. Hard to imagine how anyone can really learn anything in a hostile environment like that. I maintain that rule by fear and intimidation is NOT conducive to the learning process.
