The 34 DEMS Who Voted NO On Health Care Reform

" The 34 Democrats who voted against health care reform last night are by and large a familiar set. They overlap significantly--though not entirely--with the 39 Democrats who voted against the House health care bill in November. Just as in November, most hail from contested districts, in the south and the midwest. But just as in November, there are some surprises--members you wouldn't normally expect to see voting against legislation so closely associated with the Democratic party.

Most of the Democratic "no" votes are as you would expect: conservative members from conservative districts, in many cases facing difficult re-election challenges. Blue Dog chair Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-SD) is one such member. So is Rep. Rick Boucher (D-VA).

the 2 Georgia seats are in, well Hell, Georgia and could fall at any second into the Repuke column.

I would guess that "primary-ing them" would not work as these people have had to walk a tight rope to get in office in the first place.

If the rest of the Party turns on them, that will be an instant majority flip to the repukes.

10. It stands to reason that if a few more has voted "nay", a handful of people would be happy.

It is an indirect association, not an explicit one.

No member, to my knowledge, has expressed specific gratitude to this bunch.

Neither have they successfully explained why Weiner, Grayson, Skinner, and others support the bill.

4. I can tell you my cousin called Jason Altmire's office 18 times in the last week!

He's her Rep in the northern part of Allegheny County, but part of his district is also Alliquippa which is really poorer than dirt. In a roundabout way, he said he was voting no, but he knew the bill would pass. I view that as him being able to please his conservative constituents withour threatening the bill.

once nancy had 216 + she let some go so as protect their seats in conservative
districts. I would think at least 12 to 15 would have voted for the bill if their
vote was needed.

7. I am pleasantly suprised by Chris Carney of PA-10

This guy sits in an extremely republican district, the only reason he has it was due to the previous occupant (Don Sherwood) being caught beating his mistress and then thinking that his district wouldn't care about that indecression.

This was the district that the republicans swore they would get back in 2008 and did not. So to see Chris Carney voting with HCR is exciting. See along with this being a very republican district, it is also very poor & rural. So alot of these folks will benefit with the passing of this bill.

should be done. Those that voted with Republicans on the Republican amendment should be the focus.

14. Easier to understand no vote from Oklahoma than NY State

It is easier to understand a Dem voting no if they are from Oklahoma than if they are from New York State.

16. Heath Shuler has lost my vote

I was so happy to be rid of the horrible Charlie Taylor but Heath Shuler is no Democrat. I've never understood his opposition and his explanation via email didn't make sense.

17. Stephen Lynch (DINO-MA) has got to go

He's sniffing Scott Brown's underwear. He most likely decided to vote "no" in case he wants to run for Brown's seat in 2010 and get some of that tea party action. (Over half the electorate in Mass. are registered as independent or unenrolled.) There has been some discussion that he might be the one squeezed out by redistricting. Lynch is a complete weasel, but he usually supports union issues and the unions supported the health care reform bill. He represents a gerrymandered district that runs like a snake from South Boston through Metro West and down to Brockton. He usually just needs the unions and Southie to win. Maybe he was going for the Catholic anti-choice vote. You never can tell with Lynchie. It could be just the promise of insurance money. Whatever the cause for his "no" vote, I hope the unions dump him and back one of the two Democratic candidates who have expressed an interest in primarying him - Phil Dunkelbarger and Harmony Wu. Both are progressives who want single payer, Medicare for All.

Lynch was also one of the few in the Mass. delegation who voted FOR the Iraq War Resolution.
