1. I think they need a rat at the end of their moniker too.
How about Republicrats. Just say it over and over again until it catches on, just like they did to us. The Republicrat sponsored tea parties.

6. I dont take offense at it.
We use it all the time

"Stupack is a Democrat" we never/rarely say "Stupack is a Democratic Congressman". So what if they call it the democrat party. Names only hurt if you let them

I do have a good name for the repukes, but decorum prevents me from saying it. It's along the lines of "republiCANT" but worse

8. Do you say The "democrat" party?
What bothers me is that they actually discussed it and are totally united about using it. Therefore it must be having an affect.

12. True, that.
Whenever I hear it used it just gives me more pleasure in knowing how pissed off they are.

18. It's a bit strange.
Imagine going on a pundit-type show and having to remember to say it at every opportunity.

21. Whenever I hear it
from politicians to pundits on talk shows, they lose credibility with me. I've noticed Thom Hartmann and some others starting to call these ignoramuses out (politely) on their incorrect usage, fortunately. Maybe they will stop when they realize it makes them look like rude, insulting, uneducated partisan jerks.

13. That's my first impression.
I mean, it's not like I can think less of them. Even if they got our name right, they'd still be wrong, bloody, war-mongering bigoted idiots. :)

22. I think we ignore this at our own peril...
Look at the name of this website. Is it "Democrat Underground"? No, it's "Democratic Underground"? Is "Democrat" an adjective? No, it's a noun. I am a Democrat and I belong to the Democratic Party, not the "Democrat Party".

Do you think that when the GOP typically refers to us otherwise it's a mere oversight or pettiness? No, it's a slur designed to disenfranchise and delegitimize the Democratic Party by denying us the goodwill associated with the word "democratic" and it's no accident. Do you think it's an accident that the GOP leans heavily on guys like Frank Luntz to help them frame things as "tax relief" or "death panels"? Why do you think so many americans embrace values that are at odds with their best interests? They're being propagandized and manipulated by the GOP.

There's something far more insidious at work here also. If you refer to our political system as a "democracy", the GOP/RW will angrily respond that we are not a democracy, we are a republic. Only half of that statement is true. We are, in fact, a republic, but it's simply not true that we aren't a democracy. We just aren't a direct democracy. Our system is variously referred to as a democratic republic (which really makes the GOP angry), as well as a constitutional republic or a representative democracy, all of which are ways of noting that we are a democracy, we're just not a direct democracy (which would be impossible in praticality).

The real issue here is the disdain of the GOP for democracy (I honestly believe many of them would prefer a more authoritarian system that would roll back rights for many citizens), so they refuse to refer to us by our actual name when they refer to the "Democrat" Senate majority, for example. That would be like trying to deny that indirect lighting is, nonetheless, lighting.

You can take this lightly if you like but, in my estimation, we're merely playing right into their hands when we do so. At the very least, I implore you not to adopt their language and refer to our party as the "Democrat Party", even casually. We've worked long and hard to get where we are; please don't let it backslide by not safeguarding our good name.
