Man Wears ‘Sign Of Shame’ As Punishment


PETERSBURG, Ind.—An Indiana man who sent an obscene message to a teenager is ordered to wear a sign on his back, publicly professing his crime.

Dennis Brooks, 41, pleaded guilty to a Class-D felony for intentionally sending obscene material that was harmful to a minor. He posted an obscene message on a 17-year-old female’s MySpace page in August 2009.

As part of his punishment, the judge ordered him to walk up and down Main Street in Petersburg, Ind., wearing a sign of shame.

The sign read, “I sent an obscene message to a minor, and I am truly sorry.“

Brooks also was ordered to send a letter of apology to his victim, perform 125 hours of community service and serve one year of probation.
