Movies spark young adults to light up
SAN DIEGO, March 23 (UPI) -- Young adult smokers will light up immediately after watching smoking in movies, U.S. researchers found.
Dikla Shmueli, Judith Prochaska and Stanton Glantz of the University of California, San Francisco, randomly assigned 100 cigarette smokers ages 18-25 to watch movie montages, some depicting smoking and some with no depictions of smoking.
The researchers then observed the subjects' behavior during a 10-minute break to see whether or not participants smoked.
The study, published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, found smokers who watched the smoking scenes were more likely to smoke during the break and were three times more likely to smoke within 30 minutes of leaving the screening.
"The bottom line is that young adults who are trying to quit smoking should not watch movies with smoking scenes," Glantz said in a statement.
