Ohio group seeks vote to block U.S. health-bill requirement
As Congress was debating health-care legislation over the weekend, an Ohio group was collecting petition signatures in an effort to stop a key provision from taking effect in the state.
The Ohio Liberty Council wants to put an issue on the fall ballot that would amend the state constitution to prohibit the federal, state or local governments from requiring that Ohioans buy health insurance or face fines.
The council said yesterday that it has collected more than the 1,000 valid signatures of registered voters needed to start the ballot process.
"We're making choices in people's personal behavior that is effectively (saying), 'If you breathe, the government can tell you to do x, y or z,' and that's not a good position," said Chris Littleton, co-founder of the Ohio Liberty Council.
