GOP Conflicted on Uproar

House Republican leaders appear to be conflicted about outbursts on the House floor last weekend.

On one hand, some have expressed contrition for the poor behavior of their members; on the other hand, they are suggesting that the heavy-handed tactics of Democrats are to blame for their behavior.

But the laissez-faire attitude of Republican leaders has upset some Democrats, who believe Republicans are stoking an inflammatory atmosphere.

Rep. Steve Driehaus (D-Ohio) on Tuesday approached Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) on the House floor with concerns about comments the Republican leader made in an interview last week.

“Rep. Driehaus expressed a view that members need to be very careful about the words they use especially at a time when temperatures are running so high,” said a Democratic source familiar with the Boehner-Driehaus exchange.

Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) had a similar message for Republicans during his weekly briefing, telling reporters he was concerned that Republicans were fueling an already charged environment.

“We have seen violent acts committed in this country based upon differences of opinion,” Hoyer said, “and we ought to all be very careful as leaders in this country to conduct ourselves in a way that demonstrates to the public how we ought to act.”

Democratic leadership huddled on Tuesday night to discuss recent security threats against members and planned to bring House Sergeant-at-Arms Bill Livingood to brief the full Democratic Caucus today.

2. All That's Missing Is A Good Caning...

Anyone who watches the House regularly has seen how "decorum" has all but vanished and the Democratic leadership is loathe to do much about it. Last weekend was one of the worst displays of crass juvenile behavior by what are supposed to be adults. Yes, there are disagreements and this is a contentious bill, but the rhetoric and posturing is something I've never witnessed and embarassed me.

I'm sure the leadership is concerned that when you make a big deal of these outbursts you only give more fuel to the fire as the corporate media becomes fixated on the personalities and rarely on the policy. And as long as the rushpublicans know they can turn the halls of government into their street theater, they will continue to do it. What else can they do? They're totally locked out of power and still haven't been able to accept it.

so dishonored with hardly a peep from the rethugs denouncing the behavior. I think someone has to draw a line; there will be no stopping them if this is allowed to continue.

5. They've Overplayed Before...

...and looks like they're doing it again. HCR was a big deal as it was an issue that united what is a very fractured party. Losing this battle was truly their Waterloo as it took the "he didn't accomplish anything" (racist translation: "lazy nigger") and he's "socializing" the country argument out of their weaponry. The teabaggers and the echo chamber they live in has made them think they're a lot stronger than they really are and having Faux noise cheerleading and instigating reinforced that impression.

Methinks the GOOP had dreams of retaking the House & Senate this November and think their numbers are far greater than they really are.

I think the GOP is totally misreading the anger of the public. Angry? You bet we're angry! But we know who's holding up the Senate, and it's not the Democrats. Newt Gingrich shut down Congress in hopes of making President Clinton cave. The stunt backfired. I expect to see the same in November.

Politically, Democrats win this one. But I'd trade that political win for a government that functioned as it should. Isn't that what all of us want?

6. It must be stopped

This abhorrent behavior, rampant in the Tea Party movement, RW radio and TV, and spilling over into the "Halls of Justice" must be reigned in. They must be called on it at every opportunity. There has been a sea change, an odd acceptance of the incivility which has, IMO, actually encouraged the escalation of this disgusting behavior. The media, generally, has responded with only a cursory 'tsk, tsk.' The now-common use of the phrase "party of no" is said with a little chuckle, as if it's benign, as if that's okay for an entire party. From now on, I'm calling them the "party of hate, bigotry and greed." If the MSM and the Dems used this phrase consistently, perhaps some will take a step back and call out the perpetrators, whether it's their neighbors, their media idols, or their representatives in Washington. As many others have said, violence is brewing, and it's downright scary.

7. I'm a bit conflicted about it...

On one hand I think we should give them all the rope they need to hang themselves with, but on the other, I think that if we're too complicit in all of this, it could create a monster. But if they want to cater to the angry extreme right wing minority in this country, good for them. They'll see what a small minority it is in November.

I think a few attorneys need to sit the repulicans down and explain to them, very clearly, exactly when they crossed the line and the DoJ should have a follow up conversation with each of them explaining in no uncertain terms what will happen if they pursue this.
