But he arranged to be safely miles away. He was having an affair and his wife divorced over it. Then the bastard claimed he was quiting congress to spend more time with his family. After reading extensively about the investigation, or rather the lack of investigation, the concept that he arranged for her murder should still be investigated. He thinks that he is so safe from being investigated that he now jokes about it. The autopsy was a total sham and her body should be reexamined by experts.

If "his" side is throwing out threats and violence, that could be nothing compared to the hate that must have victimized old Joe, but I'm sure he imagines he handled it all with stoic heroics and a graciousness peculiar to JOE. I lives in a fantasy world that revolves around JOE.
