Experts: One-third of breast cancer is avoidable

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100325/ap_on_he_me/eu_med_avoiding_breast_cancer

Up to a third of breast cancer cases in Western countries could be avoided if women ate less and exercised more, researchers at a breast cancer conference said Thursday.

-snip-

A woman's lifetime chance of getting breast cancer is about one in eight. Obese women are up to 60 percent more likely to develop any cancer than normal-weight women, according to a 2006 study by British researchers.

Many breast cancers are fueled by estrogen, a hormone produced in fat tissue. So experts suspect that the fatter a woman is, the more estrogen she's likely to produce, which could in turn spark breast cancer. Even in slim women, exercise can help reduce the cancer risk by converting more of the body's fat into muscle.

-snip-

La Vecchia cited figures from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which estimated that 25 to 30 percent of breast cancer cases could be avoided if women were thinner and exercised more.

-snip-

Drinking less alcohol could also help. Experts estimate that having more than a couple of drinks a day can boost a woman's risk of getting breast cancer by four to 10 percent.

After studies several years ago linked hormone replacement therapy to cancer, millions of women abandoned the treatment, leading to a sharp drop in breast cancer rates. Experts said a similar reduction might be seen if women ate better — consuming less fat and more vegetables — and exercised more.

-----------------------------

and exercise means that the breast must jiggle and bounce. reports say that a breast that is bound up in a bra all the time can't get rid of negative things in the breast. that the breast must jiggle and bounce to get rid of the negatives.

also, when one loses weight the fat will travel to the breasts first (you can feel them get full and heavy) then with jiggling and bouncing the fat leaves the body.

there are reports about the above.

1. Endometrial cancer is also often an estrogen-related cancer, from what I've read--
obese women have much higher incidence of it. Guess I should start moving my behind more, I haven't exercised very much the last few years. :(

Sorry about my bad judgment.

5. They left out another important factor: breast cancer rates are lower in women
who breastfeed their children for a significant period of time.

7. "Negative things in the breast"?
Yeah, we got one of those oh-so-scientific "Bras cause breast cancer" people here. Probably believes antiperspirants cause breast cancer too. Pay no mind.

Besides, I'm tired of all the research pointing only to what women can do themselves to prevent breast cancer and blaming them for their poor eating and exercise habits if they get it. There are many kinds of breast cancer and some of the most aggressive killing kinds have been found in women who did everything right.

We need to look more intensely into environmental causes.

14. Touché
I'm very skeptical of these kinds of findings. Sure, being overweight leads to all kinds of negative health outcomes and isn't advisable in general. But I've known at least 3 women with breast cancer who were rail thin and exercised. Cancer strikes all kinds of women: it is not their "fault."

This applies to other types of cancer as well, and to both genders. I will never forget the tragedy of a male friend, a filmmaker, who died of cancer 35 years ago in the prime of life. The funeral was a travesty: everyone was blathering their idiotic theories of how he "got" the cancer and how he should have lived differently: it was because of the time he spent filming in Algeria; no, he was a bachelor and didn't eat all that well. Anything to pin blame on the victim himself. People feel they need an explanation that involves the ill person, so that they can imagine it won't happen to them (I didn't spend time in Algeria and I eat broccoli).

29. There is aluminum in deodorant and women get much
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 11:18 AM by Maraya1969
more of it because they shave their armpits. And especially because they shave and then put deodorant on right after on open pores which we all know will cause the stuff to be immediately absorbed into the skin and bloodstream - I stopped using that type of deodorant altogether.

It makes a lot of sense to me. And the fact that men don't shave so most of the deodorant get on their armpit hair makes a lot of sense as to why they don't get breast cancer either, (that and the fact that they don't have much breast tissue)

I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to know that putting aluminum on open pores is not a good thing to do.

And having aluminum in product that go directly onto the skin is an environmental cause.

BTW - You can get non-aluminum deodorant in the general drug stores now under the name "Toms"

10. A major reason why I haven't replaced my stolen car yet....
Being car-free FORCES me to walk a lot and keeps my weight in the ideal range. I know for a fact that if I had a car I would get a lot less exercise and would regain some weight. I am inherently a tad lazy, lol.

Glad to hear this. I am majorly into preventive care both in my line of work and personally.

24. I stood up. That sufficies.
The day I retired, the very day, I took off the bra.
Saved one, for grocery shopping.

I knew there was a good reason.

Actually, in warm climates, bras really increase body heat. NOT comfortable.

Just wait till I tell Mr. D. how he can help me stay even more healthy.
