Wilcox rallies crowd for Arpaio indictmentPhoenix Business Journal - by Mike Sunnucks
Speaking at an immigration reform rally in Washington Sunday Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox called for Sheriff Joe Arpaio to be indicted.
A video of Wilcox at the rally shows the supervisor asking protestors to call the U.S. Justice Department and leading a chant, “Indict Arpaio.”
A federal grand jury in Phoenix has been looking at abuse of power allegations against the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
She also said Arizona is “ground zero” for immigration reform but has beena testing ground for anti-immigrant policies and repressive enforcement tactics. Wilcox characterized the sheriff’s tactics akin to a “police state.”
Arpaio and Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas indicted Wilcox last year alleging she failed to disclose business loans and conflicts of interest on county disclosure forms. Those charges were dropped but a special counsel is still is looking at the cases.
Arpaio denies wrongdoing and said earlier this week he would continue his immigration and crime sweeps despite criticism. Arpaio said those sweeps are aimed at picking up criminals. The sheriff told the Phoenix Business Journal Monday he believes he is still popular with voters and the MCSO said the D.C. protest wont deter its immigration and crime raids.
