GE is celebrating the Ronald Reagan Centennial....

...with rather nauseating new television ads, that seems to be furthering the agenda of Reagan deification and worship.

Here's an excerpt from an article detailing their "celebration."

As part of a one-year celebration to honor the 100th anniversary of Ronald Reagan's birth, General Electric will run ads honoring the 40th president's legacy -- and will donate $10 million to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library, along with an additional $5 million in scholarships.

This is fitting. In a very real way, General Electric was the vehicle that Reagan rode in his journey from film star to politician. It was a symbiotic relationship, too: Although GE paid Reagan $150,000 in the mid-1950s -- when his movie career had stalled and such a salary was worth more than $1 million in today's dollars -- GE had a reputation for working its people hard. Reagan was no exception. For eight years, he was the host and sometimes star of "General Electric Theater," a Sunday night program that aired on CBS, and a prolific "corporate ambassador" who traveled the country speaking at GE factories. There were a lot of them: Under chief executive Ralph J. Cortiner, a pioneer in decentralization, GE had 139 plants in 38 states, according to Lou Cannon in "Governor Reagan: His Rise to Power" -- and Reagan spoke at most of them, delivering as many as 14 speeches a day.

I was rather shocked by the response when he died (and the rather immediate "hero worship"). I thought it would take a while to reach those levels. I was forced to avoid the media for the two weeks of coverage after he died--it made me sick.

Apparenthly the UCLA Medical Center took on his name, I'm not sure when. :puke:

because, of course, he was put to rest more like a king than like a former president. And I knew I'd otherwise end up listening to days upon days of praise for him spewing from people. Luckily, I was moving across several states at the time, so TV avoidance was fairly easy.

I'm glad I don't watch TV because I think my head would explode if I saw those ads.

The punk rag Maximum Rock'n'Roll had a special issue in August of 04: "Punk's not dead, Reagan is." It was an absolute classic. It was the most complete collection of stories and lists of just how badly Reagan sucked that I have ever come across. I just checked and it's still available on backorder for the whopping price of $3 ($3.29 in CA) in case anybody is interested. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with MRR except as a reader. Of all the issues I have read over the years, the commemorative Reagan issue stands head and shoulders above the rest. They truly outdid themselves with that one. Then again, they had a lot of material to work with.

12. Tuesdays on TCM have been Kurosawa nights all month

This past Tuesday was Kurosawa all day, in fact. I have Seven Sanjuro, Samurai, Yojimbo, Roshomon, and Stray Dogs on my DVR. This coming Tuesday will be Ran, Dersu Uzala, and Kagemusha. I have to watch some Kurosawa before I have to delete them. Too many good films!

This is the opposite of Ronny Reagan: too many bad policies (and terrible films).
