LOL! RNC rejects joint 'civility' statement

The Republican National Committee has rejected a proposal from its Democratic counterpart to sign a joint “civility” statement, POLITICO has learned.

Various members of the DNC — including Chairman Tim Kaine, Executive Director Jen O’Malley Dillon and Communications Director Brad Woodhouse — contacted their respective RNC counterparts this week in hopes of getting RNC Chairman Michael Steele to co-sign a document with Kaine that, in part, called for “elected officials of both parties to set an example of the civility we want to see in our citizenry.”

“We also call on all Americans to respect differences of opinion, to refrain from inappropriate forms of intimidation, to reject violence and vandalism, and to scale back rhetoric that might reasonably be misinterpreted by those prone to such behavior,” read the proposed joint statement, which came at the end of a week which saw acts of vandalism and threats of violence directed at members of Congress from both parties, but mostly aimed at Democrats who voted “yes” on the health care bill.

Republicans see the statement as an attempt to force them to either reject the statement — allowing Democrats to say the RNC finds the incidents acceptable — or to sign on to something that the DNC would later wield against them.

The proposed statement was faxed and hand-delivered to the RNC at midmorning Friday. POLITICO learned Friday afternoon that the RNC would not sign the DNC statement.

and Christian theology at that, which is not the same thing at all. It explicitly excluded me (a non-Christian), f'rinstance.

While I don't really believe that the DNC proposal was expected to be accepted by the RNC, it might have done some good by lowering the level of bile.

Having been rejected, allows the dems to count coup in a very satisfying manner. So, while it could have been a win-win, it ends up a win-lose -- and it's all the 'Licans' own fault.

8. The Moment They Become Civil, The Party Collapses...

I'm seeing a prediction I made following the '08 elections starting to come to the front...the ultimate collapse of the rushpublicans. Those beloved teabaggers of a year ago are now their worst nightmare and have hijacked the party's agenda and power structure. Add to this the inept operation Steele has at the RNC and a party void of any ideas and it's amazing they stay on their feet like they do. Not quite punch drunk yet, but soon.

All the GOOP has left is hate and fear. It's all that is holding their "base" and the moment one dares to stray...say talk about accomodation or moderation, they're pillaged by the mighty Rushbo and on Faux noise and whipped into submission. The party leadership is scared shit...they have to cater to the extremists for fear of riling the hate radio crowd. Meanwhile the teabagger "movement" has been infiltrated by Paulbots, LaRouchies and other right wing racists and making things more difficult.

There's no way the GOOP could accept a truce...their swamp is so fetid right now that the hate is the only "glue" holding that shit together.

It matters not the policy (even policy they would usually embrace) unless they are the ones who enacted it.

That is the magic of this kabuki dance. Dems can pass repub lite policy because they can turn around say big ole bad republicans don't like it. And repubs scream socialist, communist. This is what gets people all frothy and fighting for their side. When in reality the difference in policy is minimally different.

It's the best of both worlds! Corporatism lives, breathes and thrives on this bs!
