About 50 protesters rallied outside Attorney General Rob McKenna’s offices Friday, delivering a letter and petitions from about 36,000 people who object to the Republican’s legal effort to strike down the national health reforms.
Their message: “Tell Rob McKenna, shame on you, get out of this lawsuit,” Democratic activist Nathe Lawver of Pierce County told the crowd, which chanted “Shame on Rob” and “Don’t Rob our benefits.”
“I want to tell our Attorney General Rob McKenna he does not represent me,” added Janette Burk, an activist from Seattle who said she has multiple sclerosis. She told protesters she wants the national reform to remain the law “so people like me can have insurance and continue to have the hope they will have the health care they need.”
The new federal health law signed Tuesday by President Barack Obama requires people to buy health insurance starting in 2014, and McKenna says it’s unconstitutional to require people to buy a commercial product.
McKenna also questions the constitutionality of requiring states to expand their Medicaid programs to accept more enrollees at what he predicts will be a high cost for taxpayers.
He didn’t consult Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire or the Democrat-controlled Legislature in his decision to join other states’ lawsuit, which has made him an enemy of many in the majority party in Washington and a hero to those on the other end of the political spectrum.
