Congressman asks AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson to address concerns over health bill

Passage of the health care bill continues to generate controversy in both the public and private sectors.

On Monday, it was announced U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., sent a letter to AT&T and several other corporations asking them to verify that the bill’s passage will in fact cost additional expenses, including AT&T’s projected $1 billion charge.

On Friday, an AT&T company spokeswoman would not comment on the changes beyond what was stated in the company's securities filing. AT&T wasn’t immediately available Monday to address the letter sent by top-ranking Democrats to the corporation.

In a letter addressed to Randall Stephenson, CEO, chairman and president of AT&T, Rep. Waxman and U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., who serves as chairman of the subcommittee on oversight and investigations, requested that Stephenson attend a subcommittee hearing on April 21 to publicly address how the passage of the bill will impact

1. I happen to know...because I was there a few years ago AT&T took their

employees (Cingular) vacation days...eliminated PTO for a total of 8 hours regardless of seniority.

I also happen to know that their benefits is currently sporting a $4,000 deductible yes, you have to reach that before copays go into effect.

So I don't buy their shit.

3. AT&T, like many large companies, acts as its own health insurance company

They engage a health insurance company to administer the plan, sign up employees and retirees, and process claims.

But all the claims are paid out of AT&T's funds, not the insurer's funds.

So if HCR reduces health insurance company profits, it is reasonable that it will also reduce profits of self-insured companies.
