4. i think 3 parties would be a bad idea, but 4 parties would be ok.

imo, a third party would probably be centrist and could win every election. 4 parties would allow for more diversity. alternatively, i would prefer no party but that would not last long as politicians would team up.

Just prior to that Teddy Roosevelt tried with the *gasp* Progressive party.
It is not in the interests of the 2 existing parties to let anyone else play. As a result we are often forced into a 'this or that' kind of existence politically. No gray areas. The other end of the spectrum is like what, Italy or other places where they have about 30 different parties in government? Not a good situation to have to work for effective compromises.

and in order for either the Repubes or the Tea Party to come out as credible for 2016 there will need to be a major split in 2012 for the throwaway election so they can come together in 2016.

It's all about serving the greater good for their party. Both the Repubes and the Teas can't exist together - one must succeed while the other falters and you can't do that in a mid-term election. They MSM LOVES the CONFLICT that the Tea Party creates and for them and for the Repubes/Tea Party they will run (and lose) in 2012 to get ready for 2016.
