California Senate candidate Carly Fiorina (R) sent a letter to her supporters yesterday in honor of the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover, which she described as a time where "we break bread and spend time with our families and friends."

Add this to the annals of unfortunate metaphors, since Passover is actually a time when most Jews abstain from eating any bread at all.

Passover marks the Jewish exodus from slavery in Egypt, when they were so rushed to escape they didn't even have time to let their bread rise. Instead, they ate Matzoh, or unleavened bread. Typically, Jews replace all bread and bread products with Matzoh for the eight days of the Passover holiday.

Again Fiorina demonstrates her cultural sensitivity...

I don't get the joke.

Besides, Jesus was celebrating Passover when he held the Last Supper, and the substance he was breaking and giving to the disciples is commonly described "bread," even though it was obviously unleavened--i.e., matzoh.

Communion wafers are also unleavened, and what is consumed at Communion is known colloquially as "bread and wine."

When Christians speak of "breaking bread together," they are not just referring to eating a meal with a loaf of bread in it, but often to Communion, where they are eating unleavened bread.

So really, this is picking at nits, people. Sorry to poop the party, but don't worry--there are plenty more and better reasons to ridicule Carly Fiorina than this one.

(Ask yourself...if, say, Rachel Maddow, or Barack Obama, said this, would you be hooting at their ignorance of Jewish custom, or would you be saying "Nothing wrong with that--matzoh is unleavened BREAD!")

Then I guess a lot of people are crazy for calling it "unleavened bread" and for referring to Communion wafers as "bread" too. Oh well. A lot of people certainly do.
