http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/30/pennsylvania-a-f-l-c-i-o-backs-specter/Senator Arlen Specter — the Pennsylvania Democrat currently facing a primary challenge – has won the backing of his state’s A.F.L.-C.I.O., the latest in a string of endorsements he has received from organized labor.
In a statement released today, Bill George, the president of the Pennsylvania A.F.L.-C.I.O., called Mr. Specter “the strongest advocate and supporter for good jobs, fair trade policies, workers’ rights and quality affordable health care for all.”
Mr. Specter, who was first elected to the Senate in 1980, is being challenged by Representative Joe Sestak in a May 18 primary.
In addition to the Pennsylvania A.F.L.-C.I.O. – which says it represents 900,000 workers – Mr. Specter has captured the endorsements of, among others, the United Auto Workers and the Pennsylvania chapter of the Service Employees International Union.
