Analysis: Florida Republicans use tough times to play to base
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/politics/os-ideology-versus-budget-20100331,0,7396525.storyAs the 60-day legislative session nears the midpoint, House and Senate leaders are advancing a gamut of ideas designed to play to their political base, from cutting taxes on corporations to a referendum asking Congress to balance its budget. There is ballot language denouncing the federal health-care reform.
At the same time, budget writers are pumping Florida's 2010-11 spending plan full of tax credits for films and aerospace firms as well as sales-tax breaks for yacht- and plane-buyers, all in the name of job creation.
"What we're doing here is making an investment," said Sen. Don Gaetz, a Niceville Republican running for Senate president who sponsored the $193 million jobs package that passed his chamber last week. "We're planting some seed corn in hopes of a harvest in years ahead."
They're also waging an assault on public-employee unions by trying to end teacher tenure and lifting class-size caps, scaling back pension benefits, privatizing prisons and even threatening to blow up an entire state agency.
With "investments" like this, I'm sure will turn around its economic problems in a matter of months!!
I can hardly wait!
