1. Thom has this theory that Obama is taking the "drill baby drill" meme
away from the Republicans.

I think Thom is an optimist.

4. For once, I agree with Thom
It's quite obvious if you actually read what Salazar and Obama said. Oil is no panacea, we only have enough to meet 2% of our needs, it will have no affect on gas prices, etc. Clearly he is taking their bullshit talking points away from them.

7. well, and doing severe harm to the environment, of course...
...but that's a pretty minor detail in the face of an opportunity for scoring a few meaningless political points, after all.

9. Better to harm Canada's environment
Out of sight, out of mind, I guess.

There won't be any drilling. These are people who can't deal with abstract ideas. They only deal with the reality in front of their face.

Well Obama just put reality in front of their face. Here's your drilling, baby, so now that you know it's not going to be more than a spit in the bucket - how about we move along to alternative energy.

So there isn't going to be any. Please note, only the dumbass red states are getting their "wish", or rather, he's calling their bluff.

when he can establish progressive safety standards.

6. Tanker spills and human error --
do not obey "progressive safety standards". I have personally cleaned up the afteremath of oil spills effecting the SF Bay.

8. every drop will do environmental harm....
Edited on Wed Mar-31-10 01:37 PM by mike_c
Even with the most stringent "safety standards" imaginable. Consumption itself will do as much harm as accidental release, etc. The only way to make it safe for the planet is to leave it in the ground for a few more centuries, at least.

This is mostly about oil company profits, IMO.
