Edited on Thu Apr-01-10 10:47 AM by DeschutesRiver
It has been two years last month since my beloved Chelsea passed away, and I still think of her every single day. I know now that I will think of her every day for the rest of my life, as she was one of the best dogs I've ever had the pleasure to know.

Condolences to all who have known the best friends we can ever have in our dogs, and who've also known the pain of their passing from our lives forever.

156. R.I.P. I'm crying for all pet lovers and my Muffy.......
Edited on Thu Apr-01-10 11:34 AM by goclark
I wrote this in response to an article posted here about how helpful Dogs can be in Emergencies .....

He was 11 when he died.

1. One evening I was sitting on the couch watching television. All of a sudden I thought I was having a heart attack. Like Superman ~ Muffy jumped in my lap and started licking me all over my face -- I mean frantically!!! He would not stop!!

When he did stop,he was panting he was so exhausted.

When he stopped I realized that the attack had stopped but I still called 911.... They found out that it was a reaction to a Medication I had been taking.

He just sat there looking at me and sitting right at my feet. He would not take his eyes off of me.

2. I had a pet sitter for Muffy and she told me that when her dog had seizures Muffy would put his paw on her 60 pound dog's paw until the seizure was over.It was hard to believe.

Later she told me that she had told Muffy to come and get her whenever "Baby" was having a seizure. Muffy would rush to find her.

3.One night I was doing the Prep for my colon test.I had to run to the bathroom when the medicine started to work.

You know how that goes -- I staggered out of the bathroom and Muffy had mirrored my experience! He has runny bowels like I had never seen him have ever!

4.The sitter told me that one evening Muffy ran up the stairs barking out of control. He kept barking until she followed him down stairs. He led her to the kitchen and somehow gas was escaping. My Little Muffy led her to it.

5.I had some female surgery and was sent home from the hospital with all those wires etc. I was afraid that Muffy would get wrapped up in the wires but he never did. He sat by me and/or followed me night and day.

I was so afraid that while I was sleeping he would accidentally touch me and bother the stitches - he never did. The Dr. said I would be able to go back to work in about 6 weeks. One morning I woke up and Muffy was walking across my stomach! Nothing hurt! I was well almost six weeks to the day.

6.My Mother was called in the middle of the night - her best friend had died. Mom was not crying but she went to bed and I went to bed in my room. I woke up and looked for Muffy in his favorite spot at the foot of my bed. He was not there -- he was with my Mom. Snuggled up close to her. I tried to get him to go with me but he growled at me as if to say " How Dare You!" He slept with her for 4 nights. How did he know that she was grieving?

When the Vet realized that Muffy had only a few days to live, he gently told me that he found it worked best for the owner to be there when the final Medication was given.

I told him I couldn't bear to watch but I found myself holding Muffy in my arms following the Vet. I looked and my 88 yrs. Mom was right behind me.

The doctor gave him the Med and Muffy never took his eyes off of me.
He looked directly at me as if only the two of us were present. He
licked my nose and he went softly to sleep.

I can't stop crying now but through my tears I am so moved that so many people will be helped by this finding. This News would make Muffy so happy! He is probably saying, " I tried to tell you we could do it!"

158. what amazing and lovely stories
Muffy is probably on Bailey's welcoming committee.

 for Muffy and Bailey. Dogs are the best--if they ran the world, or if we ran the world by their principles, what a beautiful world it would be.

Edited on Thu Apr-01-10 12:44 PM by goclark
Dogs are just so special.

So many people tell me that I should get another Dog.

I just can't do it.

I'll know when/if.... because I believe I will just get a feeling that Muffy wants me to do it.

Until then I'll have my Memories.

I think one of the hardest things about being human is that we have such a short amount of time with our beloved pets. It doesn't keep us from having them, but it hurts none the less when we lose them.

18. I'm so sorry. Let me tell you about a dream I had the other night...
Our beloved dog died in June 2008. And oh lord, we miss him terribly. His ashes are on our mantle.

But about that dream...

I dreamed about him. He was healthy and running around like he was a pup again. And funny thing was, even in the dream I knew he was dead and so did HE. But he wanted me to see that he was happy and no longer felt any aches and pains and he could see well nad he could run and jump and play.

I'll never forget that dream or him. And your Bailey is happy and healthy now, too, and he'll always be with you.

29. He was loved every day of his life.
He never knew hunger or cruelty because you were there. He would be with you still if he could.

You had the great good fortune to have his love and give him yours. Grief is the last privilege of love.

You will never forget him and he will never be replaced. But there is another dog who needs you and will love you and will be someone else completely different for you to get to know. Go find him. You have a vacancy. Fill it.

After we lost our dog Cody, a couple of weeks later I told my wife that the house was too empty and quiet. So, we went down to our shelter and adopted Buddy. There will always be a place in my home for a dog or two.

They're truly the best friends one can imagine.

They're truly part of the family.

They're truly the embodiment of "unconditional love"

May Bailey dwell happily for eternity in the warm sunny fields just over the Rainbow Bridge.

May the two of you be someday reunited.

62. it is so very painful. Let yourself cry.
Crying is healing, as hard and as long and as often as you need.

I'm crying now myself...been crying quite a bit lately--two year anniversary coming along--lost my baby, Weenie, suddenly, unexpectedly. She was eleven. I ache to see her and cuddle her again. Someday.

We all understand where you are. I know you can get support here anytime you need...just ask.

65. Thank you for giving Bailey your unconditional love and a lifetime of companionship.
I know the loss of your cross-species family member is heartbreaking. Nothing can truly soothe that pain but the passage of time. You'll always carry Bailey in your heart, and he'll remain close to you in that way.

Take care and go safely --

Time and tears....the only things that help.

We Have A Secret

We have a secret, you and I
that no one else shall know,
for who but I can see you lie
each night in fire glow?
And who but I can reach my hand
before we go to bed
and feel the living warmth of you
and touch your silken head?
And only I walk woodland paths
and see ahead of me,
your small form racing with the wind
so young again, and free.
And only I can see you swim
in every brook I pass
and when I call, no one but I
can see the bending grass.

I know what it's like to lose a great dog. They get so under your skin. And under your guard. We let them in so deep that when they go the grief can be cavernous. Bailey is at peace now. May that be your consolation. My heart is with you.

Would like to hear stories about Bailey. That's part of life. I have had two run over, Tippy when I was 13 and Sasha (rescued) when I was 48. I never got over those, even though I have had many others. Actually, miss them all, but it's a blessing when you know they had a long life and you did all you could at the end. So here is to Bailey. Last fall for us, it was Missy - she was 16 and a rescued puppy farm Pom. We only have rescued dogs now - you know, only those who will rescue us. Here's Missy, from Christmas 2003. And thanks for loving Bailey, and even more for letting Bailey love you.

103. Bailey plays free of the limits of a worn out body now
And my guess is he would want you to keep his youthful spirit in your heart, not the old dog you will mourn for.

A beloved old dog leaves a hell of a hole in one's heart when they take their leave. And they would probably want us not to feel such pain. Their love survives their bodies. Energy can't be destroyed.

But we miss their sounds, smells, touch.

Strength to you at this sad time.

May you feel the stirrings of a familiar soul around you.

I'm more of a cat person when it comes to my own pets, but as the son of a Veterinarian I tend to love all animals and Bailey's a cutie.

153. No doubt about it.
The worst that my cat does to me is bite me when we're playing or occasionally to let me know that he's hungry. Family members on the other hand.........

My Dad told me countless times that the more he got to know people, the more that he loved animals. He once had a German Shepherd put its' teeth the whole way through his hand when he was treating it. His philosophy was that the dog didn't do anything wrong, it was his fault for allowing himself to get careless and that he would have done the same thing if he was the dog.

165. We who devote ourselves and much love to our dogs
understand your pain. Took 5 years for me to get over my West Highland's death by cancer and for me, finally, to get a new love of my life, an Australian Silky puppy to fill the abyss, to love, to obsess, to laugh at twenty times a day and to lay on my shoulder most of the day while I am mesmerized by the infinity of the internet; To fill the black hole we are left with when a loved one passes. It's premature, but, don't wait 5 years to fill the void as I did.

Although I have other critters I am still not over the loss of my Shana. No matter how many dogs you have one will come along that will occupy a large piece of your heart and leave a hole when they leave. I and my furry buddies wish you healing.

170. Been through that with two dogs and three cats
and non-pet people usually never get it.

I am so sorry for the loss. Just from the look of that portrait, Bailey must have been a very good friend indeed.

173. My heart goes out to you, Bailey and all who loved him....
I've had to go through too many of those times. I always have 2 dogs and have had to lose too many of these friends. My DU name is the first letter in the names of all the dogs I've had in the order they graced my life starting at 3 yo & including my current 2. I know the pain you're feeling -- it does get easier but I tell you, I can still get teary eyed about dogs who died 20 years ago. There's a moment that something jogs my memories and sometimes it still brings tears. But mostly I have warm, happy memories of them. I always felt it was some cosmic cruelty that dogs lived such short lives compared to most people, but then I have to remind myself that I've rescued dogs who were in terrible situations and had many unique, wonderful dogs in my life because of this cosmic joke.
