The father of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, Albert, has been ordered by a judge to pay legal fees to Fred Phelps, leader of the Westboro Baptis Church in Topeka, Kan. Phelps and other church members picketed Snyder's funeral four years ago in Maryland after he died in Iraq.

After his son's funeral, Albert Snyder sued the Westboro Baptist Church and won a $5 million settlement. But through the appeal process, a judge has since reversed the jury's decision. Now Snyder will have to pay more than $16,000 to cover the church's legal fees.

Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church told FOX 4 News that court rulings, even rulings that go against the church, means more coverage that allows the church to spread their message around the world.

"We're speaking to the living," said Phelps-Roper. "We're speaking to the nation. We're speaking to the world. You understand? If you don't obey God, his promises to curse you are very real and this is what it looks like."

Snyder told FOX News that he will not be writing a check any time soon.

"I've been working against this church for four years and I know if the Supreme Court reverses this decision I'll never get that money back," said Snyder.

1. I thought Bill O'Reilly is paying this tab.
Where did I see that? Is it true?

3. If you read the original complaint by Albert Snyder...

You will discover that the first three digits of the zip code of the principal place of business of the Westboro Baptist Church, Inc. are: 666.

You will discover that, at the time of the complaint, Westboro Baptist Church, Inc. operated a number of websites including:
godhatesamerica dot com,
godhatessweden dot com, and
godhatescanada dot com.

(I wonder how God feels about North Korea and China.)

Here's a link to Albert Snyder's complaint, which may be identified as Civil Action No. 1:06-cv-1389-RDB, commenced in the United States District Court, District of Maryland:

5. The ruling is the product of great and willful stupidity.
I'm all for free speech but Reverend Phelps intrudes, and intrusion is the very definition of injustice.

Snyder has stated he does not have the money. If he does indeed need to pay this now (it might be on hold because the Supreme Court has agreed to review the case), Norman Goldman will be taking up a collection at his website. Meanwhile, right-wing court or not, I really doubt the SCOTUS will uphold the appellate decision. It's asinine.
