1. Odd that the % change in unemployment is shown in blue.
Makes one wonder.

9. I don't think there's much doubt anymore that we are in recovery.
There is a lot of legitimate debate about the durability and scope of the recovery, but there is little doubt that economic output is expanding again.

4. Good graphs, but something strikes me right off the bat. It gives graphs for both
1980 and 1981 recessions, both graphs go into 30 months. So how is it that the graph for 1981 isn't just included in the 1980 graph?

If the two were blended I think we would find that it would still show it was less bad than this one, but still, I don't understand how or why the 1980 recession is split into two parts.

5. Because they were two different recessions.
There was a recession in 1980 that lasted only six months. Then it appeared to rebound, only to double-dip into what is known as the early 80s recession, which lasted over a year.

7. My point exactly, it turned out not to be the end, so why paint it as such?
Some of the other graphs show little rebounds and redrops. Or perhaps if he graph stopped at the 6month, but it doesn't, so there's an overlap in there that makes both of those graphs somewhat suspect.

Anyway, thanks for trying to explain.

6. An economist on Bloomberg, yesterday, said the Unemployment
in this recession is greater than the last four recessions
combined.

8. That statement doesn't make sense.
If he's measuring by unemployment rate, 1981 was worse. The cumulative amount of unemployment in prior four recessions as a percent of the labor force (the only meaningful comparison) would be larger. Yes, the increase in unemployment is larger than ANY of the past four recessions, but it would be an odd measurement to come up with what they said.

10. Tool-monkeys making eye-candy for the internetz, but lacking
the requisite knowledge to make the charts meaningful.

If you look at the numbers behind the charts there is much more to be gleaned.
