Gay couples celebrate the Iowa Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage, opponents still fight

A little less than a year ago, Mike Yowell and Hersh Rodasky walked past neo-Nazis to get their marriage license.

The group was in full force outside the Council Bluffs courthouse on April 30, 2009, shouting anti-gay slurs on bullhorns and holding signs with sentiments of the same ilk. When Yowell and Rodasky walked by, the neo-Nazis raised their hands and yelled, “Sieg heil!”

But Yowell and Rodasky didn’t care. They’d waited 28 years for the day, and Hitler himself couldn’t have stopped them.

After they’d filled out the necessary paperwork, the deputy Pottawattamie County recorder told the couple they could exit out a back door to avoid dealing with the mob a second time.

“There was no way in hell,” Rodasky said. “We walked proudly out the front doors and walked by (the neo-Nazis) with our heads held high.”

Brian English, director of public relations for the Iowa Family Policy Center, said his group’s stance on the ruling hasn’t changed.

The policy center is a Des Moines-based nonprofit Christian advocacy organization that takes on three forms. The policy center is a research and education organization that monitors public policy and keeps Christians informed. The organization’s second and third forms are IFPC Action and the policy center’s political action committee, which are directly involved in politics, including lobbying at the statehouse in Des Moines.

“Courts don’t make laws. The Iowa Constitution still says that the legislature is the only body that makes laws,” English said. “We also oppose it from a moral and religious viewpoint. We believe that homosexual behavior is immoral and sinful. There is an ultimate standard for right and wrong and that standard doesn’t come from the Iowa Supreme Court. It comes from God.”

English said if Iowans were given a chance to vote on an amendment to the Constitution banning same-sex marriage it would pass.

These buffoons repeatedly ignore the fact that the courts DIDN'T make the law. The courts simply did their duty and declared the law the legislature wrote (outlawing gay marriage) unconstitutional.

5. I live in Iowa. There are about 10% of the populace that cares one whit

about the equal marriage decision. It doesn't even make the top ten of issues on Iowans minds.
In the year since equality has been the rule we hear almost nothing save a republican voice in the wilderness. Really, few people care. A week after the decision, it was already off the board here.
There has been no cataclysmic weather event (the floods were during the discrimination days). There has been no noticeable increase in divorce. Satan has not made a personal appearance. In short the very worst thing that could happen has happened to the purveyors of fear:NOTHING

16. As a licensed part-time pessimist, I'm feeling pretty good about this.

I think the more time goes by, the less threatening it is. I think most Iowans will eventually shrug their shoulders and say, "so what. let them marry."

I don't know a lot of extremely RW people, but I haven't heard much about this from the moderate Repubs lately. Hopefully, it will be a non-issue soon.

Of course, that doesn't dismiss the likelihood that Steve King will use it to rally his knuckle-draggers in a few months.
