Koch Industries "Don't Buy" list.
(And I hope this doesn't start another flame war like my innocuous post about Aspartane now being called 'natural' AminoSweet.) http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=8082618&mesg_id=8082618

OK, this won't break them, but it's the principle that counts with me.

KOCH INDUSTRIES = GEORGIA-PACIFIC

Toilet paper: Quilted Northern, Angel Soft

Paper towels: Brawny, Sparkle, Mardi Gras

Paper napkins: Vanity Fair, Mardi Gras, Dixie

Paper plates/bowls: Vanity Fair, Dixie

Paper cups: Dixie

Other KOCH brand names under their Invista division:
Dacron, Antron, Cordura, Lycra, Coolmax, Solarmax, Tactel, Polarguard, Stainmaster, Comforel, Thermolite

http://www.worldofkoch.com/

Koch Family Foundations

Sons Charles G. Koch and David H. Koch run the company as well as Koch Family Foundations, one of the largest single sources of funding for conservative organizations in the United States. Organizations and think tanks supported by the foundation include Citizens for a Sound Economy, the libertarian Cato Institute, Reason Magazine, the Manhattan Institute, the Heartland Institute, and the Democratic Leadership Council. David H. Koch ran for president on the Libertarian Party ticket in 1980. Author Thomas Frank wrote in "What's the Matter with Kansas?" that "Koch money flowed through Triad Management Services"<3>, an advisory service to conservative donors groups and candidates, for the 1996 Senate campaign of Sam Brownback.<4> Other sources only hint at a connection of Koch family members and Triad.<5>

Koch Industries gave $948,000 to federal candidates in the 05/06 election cycle through its political action committee (PAC) - 17% to Democrats, 82% to Republicans.

3. Can't we get a comprehensive list of all the products and companies we are to avoid
so we will know what is left?

8. BuyBlue.org gave their list of "good" companies to Advomatic
http://www.advomatic.com/ They are supposed to be revamping the BuyBlue.org site for a return, but right now it is listed as under maintenance and I do not see any place on the Advomatic site for the information.

13. Well, with all of the subsidiaries and connected ownership I am surprised there is anthing left.
The bottom line is that unless you inform the company why you are boycotting them or not using their products and services, how do they know and what difference does it make other than to make you feel good about yourself?

One problem is that there are millions in this country who economically do not have a choice as to buy or use what is the least expensive, unlike here at DU where a recent survey showed nearly half of us have incomes of $50,000 or more. A lot of Americans and even good Democrats do not have the luxury of boycotts or only patronizing "good" companies.

18. BUT..the companies do not know how much I buy of their stuff
or if I ever have used it.
So my letter saying I am boycotting carries as much weight as someone who does buy and sends a letter.

21. If you don't write they will never know regardless of how much you might buy.
I heard someone specifically address this issue on NPR last week.

25. That probably accounts for their 17% of donations to "Democrats"
Because you know damn well no REAL Democrats are getting contributions from Koch fascists.

7. I Won't Give Up Toilet Paper
But if we stopped buying paper products, in general, our environment would be better off.

12. The only thing on that list I've bought ...
are the Vanity fair Napkins. I will definitely stop. But I really do prefer them (luncheon size, so we don't waste so much paper) to the junky kind.

I know I should use cloth napkins. I do whenever company comes. But then I have to launder (and often bleach, which is bad) them, and then iron them all. Yuk. I guess I could go get some permanent press napkins in a dark color for every day.

Or I could pretend I didn't read this thread ;)

19. I don't know these Koch people, but back when I still had a tv that
worked, I used to see the name "David Koch Foundation" as sponsor of PBS programming a lot. Here's the website of just one of the Koch Foundations, David's which list his foundations' recipients; judge for yourself. I don't think the OP is being completely objective:

Edited on Mon Apr-05-10 07:13 PM by localroger
Considering that as an industry they are a big customer of mine and it's my company taking their money, I will do so without guilt.

23. I didn't know Koch had bought
GA Pacific. Shit.

I use both Sparkle and Mardi Gras....I won't be anymore.

Any suggestions on other types of paper towels? I don't do Proctor and Gamble...they test on animals.

Maybe I should just go CLOTH like my grandmother had to do. I will for napkins....damn hard to give up paper towels. But to keep $$$ out of the Koch family's hands, I can do it. Easy.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I spend $$$ with my heart and soul. No Walmart and No 'Made in China' unless that's the only place that manufactures the product.

27. Marcal paper products are 100% post consumer recycled. Cheap too.
I would never buy expensive, non-recycled t-paper, paper towels, etc. Haven't for years.
