Two boys were mauled by two pit bulls Friday evening in La Vista, suffering serious bites and resulting in hospital stays.

The boys, ages 8 and 12, suffered wounds to their arms, legs and buttocks, and, in the 8-year-old’s case, possibly a broken wrist, said Mark Langan, vice president of field operations for the Nebraska Humane Society.

The attacks happened about 7:30 p.m. in a residential neighborhood near 75th and Harrison Streets, where the boys were playing together.

The boys were taken to separate hospitals one to Bergan Mercy Medical Center, the other to Midlands Hospital in Papillion and were still being treated Friday night.

Murrieta police say the 22-year-old mother Carrie McKinney had left the baby in a car seat on the floor in her boyfriend's apartment on Saturday. Sgt. Bob Landwehr says the woman and her boyfriend, Doug Ritchey, left the room when pit bull and pit bull mix attacked the baby, tearing off the infant's diaper and biting his scrotum.

Suddenly they are two different dogs.

My first thought is that no one cares about journalism anymore, but I know better. What they care
about is writing a story, regardless of the facts, that will get headlines in other outlets.
They don't care about the kids, they don't care about the community. All they care about is that
sensationalism and lies sell better. And they follow a long line of similar trash -

It gets people hurt, because people focus on so-called "breed" instead of on the behavior of the people
who control kids and dogs where real changes need to be made.

I hope the two kids will be ok, despite the ingnorance of many of those involved.

The greater Omaha area has had pit bulls involved in over a dozen attacks in less than 2 years. One attack put the parents of the victim in bankruptcy. The dog owner had no insurance.

I often promote animal rights on this forum. I posted about chickens and seals in the last couple days.

Not all pits are attack dogs. But owners of ALL pits need to be careful and insured! In Omaha that is now the law. Unfortunately several attacks since the law was put on the books have involved owners that didn't follow the law.

It doesn't mention 2 pit bull(S). I never saw the other local articles. I posted the story I had at hand. Some pit bulls are good dogs. Some aren't. I had a boxer some people thought was a pit. Once on a leash in a park she caused a panic at a picnic table. One mother was yelling about my baby killer. I can see both sides of the issue. But pits do need to be held to a higher standard to prevent stories like this from giving them a bad reputation.

In that I was wrong. I agree that anyone with a short haired muscular looking dog needs to be very careful, to hold their dog to a higher standard to avoid "OMGPITBULL" stuff. Also, educating everyone you come in contact with helps too.

I have had dogs all my life and have never left children unattended with the dogs. Even the most mild mannered dog can bite.

I don't have a dog now, but grew up with one. Honestly, I would say, never leave children unattended with strange dogs. But mostly ten and twelve year olds often sleep with their dogs, LOL. No, I never did that.

Note: I lived next door to the meanest German shepherd in the world. He viciously attacked me when he got out of his dog pen in the yard. The wound was on my hip, and I got away with not telling or showing my parents the result, because I was afraid they would make me get rabies shots. It was the collective effort of all four children at that house that restrained the dog long enough for me to crawl back over the stone wall and safety. My point is that those kids were alone with that dog all the time, and he was just not a threat to them. The dog was an enormous threat to anyone other than the family, though. But, they did at least always keep him in their yard. LOL I never went over there again after that incident.

I wish dog owners would halt letting their dogs roam free. That's what causes these things. Damn it, there are leash laws.

It is true that the owner is responsible, but we need to stop it before a kid gets bit, or worse. And the most effective ways to prevent that have been to enforce leash laws, educate owners (and kids too, on how to deal with animals), and reduce overpopulation by making spay/neuter readily available.

Just a note - not all these places have leash laws, as hard as that is to believe.

21. Anyone owning a large dog capable of easily killing a human:

Should be required to take a training course BEFORE purchasing the animal and should be required to take the dog to a special training class.

Too many people think dogs are children or status symbols and not potentially dangerous animals with instincts. If you have a large dog and the dog is the Alpha instead of you, there WILL be problems.

IMO - the other one is probably of indeterminate breed but "looks like a pitbull" - whatever the hell THAT looks like. Ever played that "identify the pitbull game?" Unless you're a professional who works with "PITBULLS" - odds are you can't.
