I wasn't even alive.
I never owned a slave.
I never bought a slave.
I never sold a slave.
I never owned a plantation.
The only cotton I ever touched is on Q-tips in my medicine cabinet.
I challenge any former slave still living to come forward and claim that I was there and participated.

Then the same guy says in another post:

It is as if people take the bits and pieces they like that have nothing to do with how they live.


There is an argument for affirmative action that says the disparity of wealth needs a boost to correct past wrongs. But I agree that just like the sins of the father are not the children's fault, the accomplishment of the father are not the children's glory.

Ask him about estate tax, since by his statements, he also does not have claim to all of his parents money either.

But I once knew a well to do Southern white family that was all Old South and Old Money, like going back to the colonial era. Their ancestors owned many slaves and they were an elite plantation family. Their familial wealth, which is still very much intact today, was built on the backs of slave labor. Should that specific family pay reparations? I say yes.

and to think I've actually seen that rationalization used on ostensibly Democratic boards as well *COUGH, COUGH!*

That argument is SHIT! It doesn't matter whether you're descended from slave owners or from indentured servants, from early 20th-century processees at Ellis Island or immigrated from Europe yourself: if you're white (or several other ethnicities, for that matter), you're already several rungs higher on the ladder of economic success than the descendants of slaves from Africa. To the first person to denounce Affirmative Action, I ask you to review why that legislation was enacted in the first place; if not for AA, the balance would be tipped even farther toward whites, and a quick glance reveals that there's a huge gulf of inequity that needs to be bridged.

So, if you're white and even if none of your relatives actually owned slaves, you've benefitted from a system rigged against the descendants of those slaves - whether you're willing to admit it or not.

The amount of anti-immigrant fervor was fairly high more than once. People were beaten up and killed for being immigrants.

The anti-immigrant rhetoric today is nothing compared to the anti-Catholic and anti-German rhetoric from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The anti-Chinese rhetoric would shock most kids.
