Last year, Barbour issued a similar proclamation in his state that did not mention slavery. He also noted that his state has a holiday, Confederate Memorial Day, that has been maintained by Democratic and Republican governors and the state's majority-Democrat legislature. The state also honors the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Confederate general Robert E. Lee on the same day in January.

"I don't really see what to say about slavery, but anybody that thinks that you have to explain to some people that slavery is a bad thing, I think that goes without saying," Barbour said.

Mississippi's events aren't embraced by everyone.

"I think it's unfortunate that the governor is so insensitive to the atrocities made against African-Americans in this country by the former Confederate States," said Derrick Johnson, president of the Mississippi NAACP. "As governor of the state with a higher percentage of African-Americans that any other, we would hope he would be more sensitive to them."

"We have always raised out opposition to any memorial day that would raise some type of positive light on the Confederacy that broke away from the United States," Johnson said. "We consider that treason."

So, If you talk about something, and leave out the "bad thing" because you "think it goes without saying" then you have a story written about only the positive things. How do I seperate this literature from a KKK recruitment pamphlet? It would be like discussing the holocost in terms of how nice the buildings and utilities were without mentioning that they were used for the murder of millions.

10. Haley Barbour got elected solely

By running on the flag. His Democratic predecessor Musgrove declared Confederate Heritage Month every April as all Mississippi governors do. But at that time Musgrove had presidential aspirations and this led him to suggested changing the flag through referendum but that people would have the ultimate vote. Actually, a pretty middle of the road position for Mississippi and far more politically correct than how it went down in Georgia. Of course, the state vote 67-33 to keep it.


Barbours entire campaign talked about the flag. Every radio ad he ran mentioned Musgrove and trying to change the flag. Many rural voters who had never voted for a Republican governor in their lives voted Barbour solely because of the flag. The same game plan Purdue ran in Georgia. Haley knows what he's doing when he's making these comments and our side does not need to take the bait.

Musgrove also got into a little issue with his family values image. During his first run, he was a family man with a wife and kids. Plenty of smiling pictures and commercials with him and his waving children. Somehow...he misplaced them during his term in office and picked up a second love interest (while he was married) who he eventually married.

I guess this didn't have to be a big deal, but shucks he was REALLY pushing that whole, "I love my family" image when he ran the first time.

I thought he was pretty decent on economic issues...he wasn't the beef plant governor was he?

As governor, Musgrove presided over what is still considered the largest economic development project in Mississippi history.

(I wouldn't call him a "liberal" democrat, though. LOL.)

Religion
In 2001, Musgrove signed legislation requiring the motto "In God We Trust" to be displayed in every public school classroom, as well as the school auditoriums and cafeterias, throughout the state.

Gay Rights
In 2000, Musgrove signed a bill into law banning same sex couples from adopting children, making Mississippi only the third state having done so. The law also says that Mississippi will not recognize adoptions from other states by same sex couples.

Abortion
Democrat, Musgrove is pro life Democrat, and as Governor signed a bill banning the public funding of abortion, with the exceptions of when the mother's life is in danger, when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, or when a fetal malformation is incompatible with the baby being born alive.
