I am watching the Today show and listening to the parents of a teenage boy justify, with indignation, what their son did.
Their son beat a teenage girl so severely, that she is now in a medically induced coma. She's lying in a hospital bed, so injured that she is barely recognizable to her family. Apparently, the victim and the perpetrator were having a text conversation when she allegedly made a derogatory comment about the perpetrator's deceased brother who hanged himself last year. The family has yet to produce any proof of these text comments.
The family, with their lawyer in tow--suggest that their son is a nice person and "a good student" who has never had problems with the law before. They bristled at Matt Lauer, when he suggested that there really is no defense for beating someone into a coma. Oh yes there is a defense, the family alleges--as they launch into a series of justifications that are all about boy--HIS feelings, HIS difficult times, HIS hurt, HIS good grades.
Humanity seems to have totally lost its way. It appears that people are taking their cues from the bullies and sociopaths that walk the halls of our government, certain corporations and other fallen institutions, such as the Catholic Church. Institutions that once provided moral leadership and epitomized the best in humanity--have crumbled before us.
Corruption, lies, bullying, greed, abuse and selfishness have trickled down from the upper echelons and have metastasized into the general population.
When world leaders torture, engage in war-for-profit, sexually abuse children for decades and lie at every turn--is it any wonder that regular folks feel so emboldened--that they have no shame in appearing on national television to defend severely beating someone into a coma?
