From what I've heard, she likes to keep her private life private, so though it's not really a secret that she has a female partner she also doesn't make a big deal out of it. Hence it's mostly only known to people who attended Harvard Law School during her deanship, and people in the gay community.

She is dean of the Harvard Law School, and has taught there since 1981. "An expert in human rights and advocacy for members of racial and religious minorities and for women, children, and persons with disabilities, she also writes and teaches about privatization, military justice, and ethnic and religious conflict." She's published a slew of books (which is maybe not a good thing for a nomination procedure), including Between Vengeance and Forgiveness: Facing History After Genocide and Mass Violence, Just Schools: Pursuing Equality in Societies of Difference, and Family Matters: Readings in Family Lives and the Law. She is the daughter of Newton Minow, who was JFK's FCC Chairman and who famously called television a "vast cultural wasteland" (what would he think today!). Besides, she has a nice smile
