Board of Directors member of Susan B Anthony Birthplace Museum
Kelly....
I just finished reading the letter you posted to your group membership on the homepage of your website for Feminists Choosing Life of New York.
It is interesting to see the places people go when they run away from the truth of their past history and actions. And, it is utterly fascinating to watch you reduced to lying about your own history documented in the archives of the very home page of the website that houses the evidence of your deceit.
There is no question that Feminists Choosing Life and Feminists for Life of America have been conducting a deliberate and methodical campaign to disingenuously use Anthony and other early feminists leaders as icons for your anti-choice movement. The actions of how you have implemented this campaign are extensively documented on susanbanthonymuseum.com, and we welcome everyone to come and review the facts. We do not make unsubstantiated accusations. We have simply held up a light to your organization's activities. The fact that you interpret the exposure of the factual history of your past as a portrayal of ‘foaming at the mouth anti-abortion loons’ is the ultimate irony. That is your own language, not ours.
The adage 'truth is stranger then fiction' certainly applies in this situation. And, indeed our group's claims about your organization would seem 'outlandish', if only they weren't documented and verifiable fact
You paint yourself the 'marginalized' victims of a 'radical' yet very small group (how wrong you are) who are besmirching your good image with outlandish claims.
Let's get one thing straight. Truth is not radical. It is what this country desperately needs to move forward against the mindset and danger of people such as yourself, who still seek to control the bodies of other women and distrust their ability to act as moral agents on their own accord. The entitlement and narcissism that you exhibit in forcing your will on their lives and futures is not to be tolerated.
The threat you pose to women's reproductive health and safety is deadly serious. You may try to disguise your intent under the phony label of pro-life feminism , but the direct and inevitable result of denying women access to safe, affordable, accessible abortion services is that women will DIE, just as they died before Roe V Wade was law of the land. They will be physically maimed. They will lose the ability to bear a future pregnancy to term. All for you to claim victory for advancing a cruel policy that will not reduce abortion rates because as you should know, criminalizing abortion does not reduce abortion rates. The statistics and studies clearly demonstrate this fact. The 2009 study by the Guttmacher insitute, a source that Feminist's Choosing Life Vice President, Joann White considers credible enough to cite on your organization's website, clearly outlines the dangers and devastating consequences to women when abortion is criminalized.
Your letter desperately tried to minimize the central focus of your organization's advocacy which is overwhelmingly dedicated to working against legalized abortion. The abortion issue consumes 90% of your website and nearly 95% of the content of your archived newsletters.
Your claim that you try to 'educate the public on the exploitative nature of abortion' is far too modest.
Why you think you would be trumpeting far and wide the fantastic success that your group founder & Susan B Anthony Birthplace Museum Owner, Carol Crossed achieved this week with her victories in advancing anti-choice legislation in health care. After all, Carol is the Vice President and Co-founder of the group Democrats for Life of America, the organization in which Congressman Bart Stupak and Senator Ben Nelson both serve on the Federal Advisory Board. Just yesterday, Barack Obama held a private ceremony with Congressman Stupak and several other Congressional Members of Democrats for Life affirming strict federal compliance with the Hyde amendment which restricts federal dollars from being used to pay for abortion services. But, that wasn't all. Not to be outdone, Senator Nelson inserted language into the bill that will force women to have to buy a separate private insurance policy, if they want to have their plan cover abortion services. Abortion riders, the 21st century version of the Scarlet letter A. Additionally, in states that currently have the abortion rider policy as law, the policy has resulted in a serious decrease in private insurance plans actually providing abortion service coverage.
Your group members and founder worked hard for this day. Let’s give credit where credit is due. Carol Crossed and Sally Winn (executive director of SBABM and former executive director Democrats for Life of America) made it a goal to work with their political Federal Advisory Board Members to restrict women’s access to safe, legal, and accessible abortion services through Democrats for Life, and yesterday was a big victory for them. After months of advocating for the passage of the Nelson amendment and protection of the Hyde amendment, their day has come!
Susanbanthonymuseum.com came about because your lies and distortions have gone unchallenged for far too long, and the support and gratitude we have received from Adams & Berkshire County residents has been overwhelming. In addition, we have had thousands of people from across the nation send join our campaign through Facebook and Firedoglake.com. We are not a small group, but a growing grassroots national outreach campaign.
People are sick of the incessant campaign by the anti-choice community against women’s reproductive health and safety. They are tired of your lies. They are tired of your bullying tactics.
You aren’t a marginalized victim, Kelly. You and all the members of Feminist for Choosing Life of New York and Feminists for Life of America are manipulative bullies who are holding our society back from moving forward and providing compassionate, safe, and effective reproductive health education, care, and support from every woman in this nation.
You aren’t victims. You are perpetrators.
