Please rank your priorities for combating global warming.
Last year, I promised you that if the voters placed Democrats in charge of the Senate we would see a new agenda in Washington. Instead of sweeping issues like Iraq and global warming under the rug, we would shine the spotlight on them and demand a new direction for our country.

My friends, our day has come. Today, in one of my first acts as chair of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, I am holding a hearing on the most important environmental problem of our generation -- global warming. This is the difference an election makes -- the difference between a Congress in denial about climate change and one willing to confront it head on.

Many of my colleagues will be testifying before my committee today, offering their opinions about the best way Congress can act to tackle global warming. But I want to hear from you, too.
Barbara Boxer

1. "Public Works" needs a public gesture, and off the top of my head...
...that would be doing what Bush should have done in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 -- slap working solar panels on every government building the United States, and subsidize solar retrofitting of homes and apartments so that it is affordable for everyone.

It's a gesture -- but gestures like that mean something.

I have my mental list -- now I'll visit Barbara Boxer's link and see how my list compares with hers. :-)

2. Here's a few I came up with.
Offer incentives for business to go to a 4 day work week.

Ban all non essential driving one day per week with the exception of high mileage, hybrid & electric vehicles and motorcycles.

Institute a program where people could buy solar and wind powered systems through their local electric company and receive a tax break for having them.

3. Bring corporations under control.
Prevent them from being able to buy influence in government. Make them accountable for the consequences of their actions.

Stop the use of fossil fuels in energy production. Fund alternative energy research and implement it. Think of the benefits of something like large solar collectors floating in the ocean (helps slow the warming of the water beneath it, clean energy). Is anyone even working on something like that yet?

4. I said 'short term' and 'long term' goals.
Short term is anything we can do in the relatively near future to conserve the oil that's left.
Mainly more fuel efficient and alternate/hybrid fuel internal combustion engines.
Plug-in vehicles.
And yeah, I know the plug in has to come from power plants currently online.

Long term, develop new, non-hydrocarbon energy sources like solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, whatever we can find.

And we now have to do both at once.
We are sooo far behind the curve on this.
