SC's Bauer: Lazy people cause illegal immigration
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — South Carolina's lieutenant governor said Friday that lazy residents who don't want to take jobs harvesting the state's crops are the root of its problems with illegal immigration.

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer's remarks came at the opening of a debate of Republican gubernatorial hopefuls. The candidates were asked about Arizona's new tough illegal immigration law and whether South Carolina should do more to fight the problem.

"The real problem is the workforce," Bauer said. State relief programs leave people unwilling to work the jobs in fields and orchards now filled with migrant workers, he said.

"The problem is we have a give-away system in this country and in this state that is so strong that people would rather sit home and do nothing than do these jobs. Laziness is not a disability," Bauer said. "There are lot of people that are flat out lazy and they are using up the goods and services that we have in this state."

Bauer has made a point throughout the race for the June 8 GOP nomination for governor of criticizing people who depend on the state for help. He drew criticism in January and made national headlines when he likened government assistance to the poor to feeding stray animals.

1. They liked it so much better when they could put the whip to the lazy slaves' backs..
You can feel the frustration ooze out of every pore of these assholes that they don't have literal slaves any more.

19. That's the truth in a nutshell right there.
He knows he can't come out and say the words anymore - thanks to all the touchy-feely Libruls and their little politically correct bleeding hearts - but it takes literally NO effort or imagination to understand that when he says "lazy" he means "lazy black people."

3. When you have to pay US prices for housing, and such, wages are the issue
And he damned well knows it!
Cheap Labor Republicans and some abusive employers are a major part of the problem.

13. This is the scariest part of this all. It's so much easier to exploit desperate people.

14. Yep. Had a high school teacher who had to hide under the outhouses in Delano County Ca back in 60s
He and a friend were there, documenting the treatment of migrant workers (legal and otherwise) and if they had been found, the land owners would have had them killed without any worries from law enforcement (in fact, it was the law that was tearing three camps apart looking for the 'outsiders') The workers bravely helped my teacher and his pal evade the thugs, but some of them took beatings for it. They needed to have their plight shown to somebody who would get the truth out.

Rapes, beatings, unbelievable conditions, murder.... Oh, it's more than low wages. Some people DO want slaves they can abuse with no chance of punishment for it.

30. It is a lazy Lt. Governor who takes a taxpayer-funded paycheck...
...and runs for Governor, rather than doing the job we are paying him to do.

5. Lazy? Try the fact that the wages paid to these people are barely livable.
And yet it is better then in Mexico so they take it anyway. What American is going to take a job like that? I mean, really.

26. That is why the Repubs want to take away the social safety network
Edited on Sun Apr-25-10 09:07 PM by csziggy
That keeps people expecting to be able to pay for minimal standards living facilities and semi-adequate food supplies.

Their idea is with no welfare, no unemployment, no food stamps, no aid to families and children, American worker/slaves will be willing to work for less than living wages. Even WITH welfare and all the other social programs, we're on our way there anyway.

6. I've been telling you guys that the GOP isn't going to be happy until we are all working the fields
But no one wanted to hear it then. Won't be long and Walmart is going to be considered one of the few "good jobs" before you know it.

17. Can't say I blame you at all.
And people wonder the GOP is at 29% approval rating.

what does this douchebag Lt. Gov think? That people would WANT to be abused for 6 dollars a day picking veggies in the hot sun?

Maybe it's just me, but if ag employers paid crop pickers a decent wage and didn't rape/murder them, they would have a more legal working pool. I'm just saying...

21. When his grandchildren start working the fields, swinging hammers, pouring concrete...
And turning down the beds of white supremacist South Carolinians on holiday maybe he'll start making more sense - but my sense is that they've been told they have better places to go and things to do, be ready: they've been told to start redefining Unemployment Benefits into 'a jobless tax' going into the next election cycle, and that's when it will start getting really petty & shitty

28. I wonder how much "state relief" the SOB gets in his paycheck
Ol' Andre seems to forget that, being Lt. Governor, he lives off the taxpayers. Meanwhile, this disgusting hypocrite off running for Governor, instead of doing the fucking job we are paying him to do.
