Bwaha Freddie Phelps gets a taste of his own medicine!!! is a vicitim of picketing
TOPEKA, Kan. - A Topeka church that has gained notoriety in recent years for picketing the funerals of fallen U.S. soldiers was itself picketed after turning a group of veterans and their families away from its noon worship service.

Veteran Jerry Bacidore and 15 supporters traveled to Topeka from across Illinois to attend a service at the Westboro Baptist Church on Sunday.

They had planned to stand at the back of the church dressed in black, silently representing soldiers who have been killed, Bacidore said in a letter published last week in The Topeka Capital-Journal.

At the last minute, church officials told the veterans' group that they were not welcome to attend, so the group from Illinois picketed nearby.

4. They aren't a "church"
The "church" is pretty much made up of Phelps and his extended family of loons.

I can't believe they haven't been met with violence at some of their funeral protests.

8. I call them the "Branch Fredphelpsians" for a reason...
Membership at Westboro is restricted to Phelps, his wife, his fourteen children, and their spouses and kids. They all live on one block in Topeka, which they've turned into a church compound. Putting it mildly, they fit every definition of a cult rather than a religious denomination.

By the way, this isn't the first time they've been picketed. When they protested the Episcopal Church general convention in 1997, they found themselves getting counter-protested by a group representing Baptists. (Phelps was kicked out of the Baptists decades ago, and they were protesting his continued use of their name connected to his group.)

16. There Are Damn Few "Religious Denominations" That DON'T Fit the Definition Of a Cult
Phelps has just as much right to call his little hate fest a church as any other cult does.

5. WTF is THIS all about???????

She said the time of the Sunday service was changed to accommodate members who had to leave for Virginia to picket a memorial service for 29 people who died in a coal mining accident.

7. Soooo, in effect, they declare themselves a 'club' with exclusive membership
and not a 'church', open to any person that might be interested in joining.

Gotcha.

9. Huh, imagine that
I remember old Fred being interviewed some years ago when Mel White still thought he could talk reasonably with Mr. Phelps. They had a totally unproductive meeting, much to White's frustration, but White mentioned afterward that he would still like to keep the dialog open. The interviewer mentioned that to Phelps, and he smiled and said that White would be as welcome as rain in the springtime if he ever wanted to come back to Topeka.

Perhaps our friends at Westboro Baptist have had a change of heart? Although I can't imagine a service there being all that much fun, they might sing a hymn or two that I'm familiar with.

Who, Cousin Vinny and Uncle Freddy? They are a family, for Chrissakes, not a church.

The fact that they do not hold regularly scheduled public church services kind of proves that.
